NEW E-COMMERCE GROCERY FACILITY BRINGS "MIND BLOWING" TECHNOLOGY TO YORK REGION
In September, Sobeys officially launched its new 250,000 sq. ft. distribution centre in Vaughan. With technology from the U.K.-based company Ocado, which includes "an army of robots", the facility is the first of its kind in North America. It also brings approximately 1,500 new jobs to the area.
The launch of the facility comes after Empire, Sobeys parent company, announced plans to spend $2.1 billion to revamp stores and expand e-commerce offerings.
"The technology is mind blowing," said Michael Medline, president and CEO of Empire and subsidiary Sobeys Inc. The facility has three temperature zones, and is aiming to solve one of online shopping’s biggest problems — getting orders right.
Delivery is currently available from Hamilton in the west, Oshawa in the east, to Newmarket in the north. Learn more from YorkRegion.com about the “huge hive of 250,000 totes carrying 39,000 of different product”.
