Call for Session Topics:
Tell Us What You'd Like to See at Nutrition 2021!
We are currently seeking great content ideas for consideration for the scientific program for Nutrition 2021 currently scheduled for July 10-13 in Boston. The Program Committee will utilize a blended model for planning, identifying sessions based on topic submissions as well as proactively curating session content.
Please tell us what you would like to see on the program. In particular, we would love your thoughts on:
- Contemporary topics that address new scientific frontiers
- Cutting-edge advances that have shared interest among ASN’s multidisciplinary audience
- New innovations in nutrition science and practice

NORC Minority Symposium
This FREE virtual series, supported by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) is designed to identify the barriers and challenges to success of scientists from groups Underrepresented in Academia (URiA) and to identify actionable strategies to overcome these challenges. This effort is being conducted in collaboration with ASN and The Obesity Society.
The virtual series includes five 2-hour sessions. The next sessions in the series are scheduled for Friday, October 23 and October 30. Each session will be from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM (CDT).

ASN Call for Applications for 2021 Science Policy Fellows
The call for applications for ASN’s 2021 Science Policy Fellowship is open through Monday, December 21, 2020! ASN is pleased to offer two one-year Fellowships to advanced graduate students, early professionals, postdoctoral trainees, or medical interns, residents, or fellows. Fellows gain an enhanced perspective on public policy issues related to nutrition and build skills to become a well-informed advocate for nutrition research and policy. ASN Launches Nutrition Research Task Force
ASN has convened a Nutrition Research Task Force to author a report that provides an overview of the current types, purposes, strengths, and limitations of the primary methodologies used in nutrition research. The report will discuss inherent challenges that exist when conducting nutrition research and the many considerations researchers must account for in nutrition studies. A secondary goal of the report is to help the public, media, and nutrition professionals better understand nutrition research. The Task Force kicked off their work with their first call in August 2020. ASN Member Elected to National Academy of Medicine
ASN Member, Regan Lucas Bailey, PhD, MPH, RD, professor of nutrition science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana was recently elected to the National Academy of Medicine for her work in improving the methods to measure nutritional status for optimal health outcomes including better understanding intake exposures and the use of dietary supplements.

ASN's COVID-19 resource page is continually updated with information, including a blog to highlight ways to prioritize nutrition and healthy living during the COVID-19 outbreak and an AJCN Associate Editor's experience in Wuhan, China. News from ASN Journals
The Tenth Workshop on the Assessment of Adequate and Safe Intake of Dietary Amino Acids (10 th AAAW) was dedicated to the internationally eminent toxicologist and a co-organizer of the Amino Acid Assessment Workshops, Dr. Yuzo Hayashi (1930-2017). In this supplement, Patrick Stover, et al summarize examples from a growing body of literature of disease-altering nutrient requirements. Martha Stipanuk discusses how the body copes with excess methionine, cysteine, and sulfide. Others discuss topics ranging from inherited metabolic disorders, biomarkers of disease, atopic dermatitis, cancer therapy enhancement, and supplementation.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition Editor-in-Chief, Christopher P. Duggan, MD, MPH, is pleased to welcome Diana Maria Thomas, PhD as Associate Editor for AJCN. Dr. Thomas is a Professor of Mathematics at the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY, and an Adjunct Professor at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center. Her research interests include obesity, research methodology, body composition, and machine learning. She will work with Associate Editor, David Allison on the “Best but Oft Forgotten Practices” series, where she has also published.

The Current Developments in Nutrition Editor-in-Chief, Jack Odle, PhD, is pleased to welcome Edward Saltzman, MD as Academic Editor for CDN. Dr. Saltzman is Academic Dean and Associate Professor of Nutrition, Friedman School of Nutrition Science at Tufts University. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine, and Chief of the Division of Clinical Nutrition in the Department of Medicine at the Tufts Medical Center. His research career has included clinical elements of obesity treatment, body-weight regulation, enteral-parenteral nutrition, and nutrition disorders.

Therefore, clear advice on the impact of the nutritional status in COVID-19 outcomes should be provided to alert the population.”

Will drinking tea lower your cancer risk? Upon reviewing 113 individual cohort studies, Zhao et al. "did not find strong evidence to support the hypothesis that the intake of any type of tea is associated with a lower risk of cancer." Calling for more research, the authors noted, “more well-designed studies with less measurement error and bias are needed to illuminate associations between tea intake and rare cancers."

Nutrition in the intensive care unit is vital for patient care; however, immunomodulatory diets rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) such as γ-linolenic acid, EPA, and DHA remain controversial for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome. Dosso et al. postulated that genetic variants impacting PUFA metabolism might contribute to mixed responses to PUFA-rich diets. Specifically, the authors tested the effects of the single nucleotide polymorphism rs174537 on differential responses to PUFA-rich diets. They found “rs174537 had a significant impact on circulating DHA and urinary isoprostane concentrations,” underscoring the importance of genetic and racial contributions to PUFA metabolism and inflammation. “Given our relatively small sample size, further investigations in larger multiethnic cohorts are needed to evaluate the impact of rs174537 on fatty acid metabolism and downstream inflammation.”
