Message from the Senior Pastor

Transitions

I write this message as our president is being airlifted to Walter Reed Medical Center after having contracted COVID19.
No matter what you or I think of him, this is a moment of gravity and reflection. Our understanding of what it means to be "in power" is shifting.
Power is a tricky thing. It allows us control over ourselves, others, and our surroundings, but power has its limitations. Our own behavior can erode our power and, of course, time always does that.
Please join me in praying for the President and First Lady and for the hundreds of thousands of our neighbors around the world who are currently battling this insidious disease.
Authority is different from power. True authority must be earned. Sara Holland's five years with us were wonderful because of the many ways she exercised her authority to lead us, teach us, organize us, and increase our faith. We will miss her dearly, but we are so excited for her as she becomes the Pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, in Plymouth, New Hampshire!
As we take some time this fall to discern our staffing needs for the future, we are incredibly blessed to welcome Daryl Denelle as our new Ministry Intern. Daryl will be offering leadership in the areas of Christian Education administration and worship during this time of reflection and planning. Daryl is a second-year student at Andover Newton Seminary at Yale and is already well-known to our congregation as a new member and as someone who has contributed to Sunday morning and Wednesday evening worship. I am personally thrilled to have her on board!
Please reach out to me with any questions, concerns, or ideas regarding these transitions.

Peace,
Pete

Message from the Moderator

Why do people always say change is good? Why can't the same be good? In many ways, it feels like everything has changed, and returning to the same sounds pretty good right now! In the spring, we made the difficult but responsible decision to close the church building. Months later, it still feels jarring to know we cannot just all join together freely and worship. But we didn't really change. We always love each other and pray for one another's well-being. We still believe in working together to make the world a better place for everyone. We continue to choose hope, even when it is hard to see. We didn't change; we adapted. We are still the same old HCC, and the same is good.

Back to the Building Update
Statement to the Congregation
September 29, 2020

We hope you all have been joining HCC in the many ways in which our church has been worshipping and gathering together over the last few months. While much of our time together has had to be virtual, when the summer weather came and it became safe to do so, we have offered in-person outdoor worship services, (practicing social distancing and wearing masks of course).

However, in New England, summer is short and the weather will soon become too harsh for us to gather outdoors. The Back to the Building Task Force has been monitoring the metrics in Hingham and the rest of the state of Massachusetts to discern ways to safely move back into the sanctuary. With the approval of the Executive Council, we determined that with proper protocols in place, as long as the metrics in Hingham are showing a reasonable Covid rate, we can begin moving Sunday worship back into the building. Our decisions will be informed by many factors, including guidance from the United Church of Christ. We will continue to offer our Sunday services outdoors for as long as possible, (sweaters may be necessary for a while) and we will give everyone plenty of notice as to when we will move indoors. October 18 is the earliest we would move in.

Returning to the sanctuary will be a week by week decision. We will continue our virtual services; (Youtube and Facebook) indefinitely, for those who feel safer at home. For those who want to come to the sanctuary, the following protocols will be in place:

1.    Please do not attend in person worship if you are feeling ill or have a fever.
2.    At first, capacity inside will be limited to 15 congregants in the sanctuary and 12 in the Hale Fellowship Hall to watch the service livestream on the TV. This corresponds to Phase 1 of the UCC guidelines.
3.    We will continue to require reservations to attend, as has been the case for outdoor worship.
4.    Masks will be required at all times while on the property.
5.    The Deacons are knowledgeable on all protocols and will be seating families and households several feet apart from one another.
6.    You will be asked to use hand sanitizer, (provided) before entering the sanctuary.
7.    The church will be cleaned properly between services.
8.    We will comply with all other state and local protocols for places of worship.
9.    Church School and Fellowship/Coffee hour are still on hold.

Informed by the guidance of the UCC, we will continually monitor the local metrics, and if the science and social evidence support it we will gradually increase the number of worshippers in the Sanctuary. Please be assured that services will continue to be offered on Facebook and Youtube for those worshipping from home.  If the trends support it, we will eventually top off our sanctuary capacity to 50 until we are ready to enter Phase 4, which is back to normal attendance and all church activities are permitted to resume. This will not occur until there is a vaccine and the State of Massachusetts permits it.

While Zoom meetings are still encouraged, small group gatherings will be welcomed back into the church on a limited basis. If your small group, board or committee (10 or less) is unanimous in a preference toward meeting in person, we are allowing meetings in Hale Fellowship Hall only. Masks will be required and seating must be at least 6-8 feet apart. Please make your request with Susanne in the church office as only 1 group will be permitted in the church at a time. Susanne will forward your request to the Trustees. And until further notice, no food, drink, or kitchen use is permitted.

If you have comments, feedback or concerns, please visit the HCC website, (hccucc.com) and scroll down to the "Back to the Building" feedback space and enter your thoughts for us to consider.

This pandemic has taught us that there are many ways to worship together and support each other. We look forward to continuing on this journey with you!

Yours in Faith,

The Back to the Building Task Force

Carrot Sunday is now Side Dish Sunday

In the past we have collected carrots for the Hingham Food Pantry. This year, instead of carrots we will be collecting rice, pasta and similar non-perishable side dishes to help meet their needs. You can bring your donations to the back porch on the lower level of the Church Office near the parking lot where there will be a specially marked plastic bin. We will be collecting from October 4th through November 1st. Monetary contributions are also welcome. You can make donations on the special offering page of the HCC website or write a check to the Hingham Congregational Church with "Hingham Food Pantry" in the memo line. Checks can be mailed, brought to Sunday service or dropped off at the Church office. The needs of our community are greater now than in the past and your contributions are greatly appreciated.
A Message from the Board of Stewardship

The Board of Stewardship is happy to announce the kickoff of our Faith Promise campaign for 2020/2021!

Mat MacIver has prepared a video
that introduces our theme for the year - "Beloved" - and reflections on what this means for us in these stressful times. You can access it on our Facebook page :
via this link - or view the text version by clicking:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1yDZn3oVdGtkEp863v1fGaChxrnkNeBbL/view?usp=sharing

Over the next weeks and months, members of the board will be preparing worship messages, delivering a Stewardship sermon and Children's Message, and working with Rev. Pete and the Deacons on our Stewardship Sunday in late November. In the meantime, we'll be reaching out to other Boards with our message and encouragement for prayerful reflection on our faith commitments. As last year, we are not setting monetary goals, but rather a participation goal of 150 pledges.

We hope you enjoy the message and find the theme "Beloved" to be a rich source of thought and prayer this Stewardship season.

Call for Fall Music Volunteers!

As we transition to indoor worship this Fall, we are in need of volunteer musicians (especially strings, keyboard, melodic percussion, (non-singers, and non-wind players)). While much research is being done on the spread of aerosols in music ensembles, it is not complete, and we have no cure or vaccine for COVID-19. Our choirs will not gather in person until we are sure it is safe to do so. Senior choir will continue to gather on ZOOM, Thursday nights, 7:30 - 9:00PM, where we will enjoy fellowship, sing-alongs, and create virtual choir anthems. Let me know if you want to join. BUCKS FOR BIRDS TIME!
Despite COVID, Thanksgiving is coming and it's time for our annual Bucks for Birds program!  Last year, we delivered over 230 turkeys to organizations who serve those in need and we'd love to repeat that number or more!  We'll collect $ donations on-line via the HCC website, Special Offering page, Bucks for Birds and during Sunday services or mail or drop off a check to the church office with Bucks for Birds in the memo line.  A donation of $18-$20 will buy a turkey for a family in need in our area. Look for more information in the November Horizons.

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK:

                  VOTING - A SACRED ACT?

Election Day is just around the proverbial corner. As we prepare to go to the polls on Nov. 3 (or vote early, absentee, or by mail), we might ask ourselves, in what kind of world do we want to live? One with clean air to breathe and ample clean water to drink - and with which to replenish fields and forests, fish and fowl? One that seeks to be sustainable, healthy, just, and equitable for all living creatures?
The environmental, health, and economic challenges are numerous. How can our faith guide us at the polls? As we are all beloved creatures of God, do we see voting faithfully as a sacred act?
