PRIDE Community Happenings
This just in from Blue Rapids PRIDE: "We continue to find plenty to do to make Blue Rapids best! Landscaping by our mural continues with a water feature being added. Picnic tables in the park are being repainted, and we just ordered 1000 tulips to beautify our town next spring." Hugoton PRIDE has been raising private funds to purchase the old downtown theater on Main Street. Several youth groups are involved in the fundraising as well as plans to renovate the building, and the community's seniors are also providing support by writing letters and donating funds. Check back here for more updates on the High Plains Theatre project as it progresses. Osawatomie PRIDE had 30 volunteers come out to clean up and beautify John Brown Memorial Park. Lots and lots of pictures of the park cleanup and other activities they've been up to lately on their Facebook page.

COVID-19 Resource - Financial Wellbeing
These are interesting times to say the least (I keep saying I need a new word for 2020, "interesting" has been my thing...have ideas on a word to replace interesting for 2020? Email me and let's banter about it! - Jaime), and this can also be challenging times financially. Many circumstances can lead to an abrupt reduction in income: a factory layoff or cutback, loss of a job, reduced farm income, or loss of a second income from a spouse. Just the threat of any of these situations is a serious blow to individuals and families struggling to survive economically in difficult times. It can happen to anyone...but there are tools that can help you navigate these challenging times. The fact sheets in the K-State Family Finance Series can help you begin to find your way when your income drops. Check out the series HERE.

Credit is also an area of concern. You can take steps to protect your credit during the pandemic, and learn what to do if you can't pay your credit card bills. Find information from the U.S. Consumer Financial Projection Bureau HERE.

The League of Kansas Municipalities - Kansas PRIDE Feature

Another set of challenges that have taken place during COVID-19 are Economic and Volunteer. There are communities out there rising to that challenge, and there have been tools developed using your input from earlier in the year!

The League of Kansas Municipalities reached out the Kansas PRIDE staff in the summer to highlight some of the opportunities out there for communities. Have a member of your community attending the conference? If you are interested in what others are doing and what tools are out there, ask them to attend the 2:30pm - 3:30pm Concurrent Workshop Session 1 on Thursday, October 15 to learn about #MitchellCountyStrong and Norton Community Foundations Local Responses, and Crowdfunding for Community Projects.

Even if you aren't attending the League Conference you can reach out to us for these tools after the conference, and we can put you in touch with our presenters! - - Jaime Menon, Kansas PRIDE Program Co-Coordinator, jmenon@ksu.edu
CONTINUING OPPORTUNITIES SECTION
GRANT WRITING WORKSHOPS
Did you know that K-State Research and Extension's Nancy Daniels presents grant writing workshops (she also does First Friday E-Calls, another AWESOME resource for communities, which are listed on a link later in the newsletter)? Check out the link below for more grant workshop locations and registration information. Due to the current COVID-19 situation, some of the upcoming in-person workshop dates may be subject to change, so keep checking back here or on the website for updates. We are also working on an online format for the future. More details to come.
External Funding Opportunities
Want to put your new grant writing skills to use? Here are some opportunities for project funding outside of the Kansas PRIDE grants:

Good Neighbor Citizenship Grant: State Farm Good Neighbor Citizenship Community Grants cycle begins October 1 and ends October 31. Grant requests must be $5,000 or more for projects in one of these areas: Safety, Community Development, Education. Find out more about the eligibility requirements and application process by clicking the link above.

USDA Rural Development Community Connect: The Community Connect Program helps rural communities extend access where broadband service is least likely to be commercially available, but where it can make a tremendous difference in the quality of life for people and businesses. The projects funded by these grants help rural residents tap into the enormous potential of the Internet for jobs, education, healthcare, public safety, and community development. Awards available from $100,000 to $3,000,000 with a deadline of late December 2020. Visit the linked page for more details.

Firefighters Charitable Fund: If you're thinking about starting a smoke detector/battery replacement program in your community or an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) program, the FCF has a continuous grant cycle that you may be interested in. More details and the application page can be found above.

Fender Play Foundation: Has your community identified an after school music program (not run by the school), a community music program, music therapy, or partnering with a local school for an in-school music program and you need instruments? The Fender Play Foundation offers lightly used, blemished, or imperfect instruments for such programs. You can find their contact info on the linked page where you can inquire about how to apply. The application time frame is continuous.
Additional Funding Resources
Is your Kansas PRIDE community looking for funding to help with certain projects? Let us know what the project is, how much you're seeking, and what your timeline looks like. We have access to a grants database and likely can give you some links to potential funding sources. Just email us at PRIDE@ksu.edu with your request and project idea. Not a Kansas PRIDE community? This resource is a great reason to join! You can also reach out to your local Extension office which should have access to the database as well. - Jan Steen, Kansas PRIDE Program Co-Coordinator, jmsteen@ksu.edu
From the History Books
This look back in history comes to us from December 1986 and highlights from the PRIDE Day workshop theme of Motivating Others. For other pieces of Kansas PRIDE history, visit our newsletter archives!
Osawatomie Community PRIDE Month
You've likely seen it mentioned in the newsletter, or in one of our presentations, that one of the benefits of the Kansas PRIDE program is networking and learning from other communities. We've just learned that the Mayor and City Council of Osawatomie have declared October as Community PRIDE Month - the first ever in that community! To see how they're doing things we've placed their letter and calendar below for reference. Happy Community PRIDE Month, Osawatomie!
Up for a Community Visit? We Are, Too!
Our offer at the end of each newsletter is to come to your community so we can present an overview of the program, should you be interested in enrolling, or to discuss the program and any of its components or training modules in person if you’re already in the program. Travel restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 situation prevent us from visiting in person currently, but we still would be more than happy to host a Zoom meeting where your PRIDE group members, city council members, chamber participants, Masonic Lodge, or other groups could individually log in to see the presentation and ask questions. Just e-mail us at PRIDE@ksu.edu to set up a schedule.

To view pre-recorded webinars giving an introduction to the program, step-by-step instructions on how to enroll or report, fundraising, recruiting volunteers, and more, head over to our Education page for more. - Jan Steen, Kansas PRIDE Program Co-Coordinator, jmsteen@ksu.edu
Aside from posting news and information on the Kansas PRIDE Facebook Page between newsletters (we don't want to end up in your junk folder!), we (as in Jan and Jaime) are now hopping on Facebook Live on some Fridays for some education and small talk - and sometimes the odd trivia question! Join us on Fridays (usually around 10am or a bit later - Jan and I (as in mostly I) are still getting used to it!) for some learning opportunities!
First Friday e-Calls: Check'em Out!
K-State Research and Extension offers entrepreneurship webinars every first Friday of the month, and there have already been several great sessions this year.  If you missed them, they’ve been recorded and are available to view at your convenience along with the slides and some notes.  Visit: https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/community/business/entrepreneurship/ for all past sessions. Growing your own entrepreneurs, Kansas Community Investment Fund 2.0, Baby Boomers and the rural housing supply, and filling empty buildings are some of the topics available for viewing. Registration information for upcoming sessions can be found here: https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/community/events/
Have a local event going on? Got great places to visit? Eat? Play?

Why not send your ads here and we will place them in our newsletter? You just have to send a high quality photo and the verbiage you want to use and we will place them in our newsletter for one month!
