Habitat Cape Cod news & updates
October 2020

Special thanks to Bank of America and The Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod for their recent grants to support the Mendes Way, Mashpee Build. We are so grateful for their continued support of building affordable homes on Cape Cod.

They specialize in plumbing of all kinds; new construction, remodeling, gas piping, hot water heat, radiant heat, water filtration and oil to gas heat conversions.
Town News
Orleans. Quanset Road.  The foundation and septic are in for our two bedroom home at 15 Quanset Road. We expect to raise walls this fall. Project Kick-Off is scheduled (via Zoom) for 4 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10th

Sandwich. Cotuit Road and Nauset Street.  We will soon be finalizing a Land Court approved subdivision plan for Cotuit Road. We will appear on Thursday, October 22nd in front of the Selectboard for the transfer of nitrogen credits from Evsun Road to Nauset Street.  After we tie up these loose ends, we will then finalize our Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) application and submit to the Town of Sandwich.

Chatham. George Ryder Road South. Our approved ZBA decision was submitted to Chatham’s Town Clerk on September 29th, following the expiration of the “no appeal” period we will record the decision and close on the land.  We plan to begin infrastructure work on this project beginning in the late fall 2021 and a wall raising in 2022.

Brewster. 26 Red Top Road. On August 27th the Brewster Housing Partnership unanimously supported our Red Top Road project.  We are planning two homes on this site. One with a veteran preference, meaning priority will be given to a veteran and/or veteran’s family (pending Department of Housing and Community Development approval).  We are hoping to submit our LIP (Local Initiative Project) application to Brewster’s Board of Selectmen for signature in November. Following our LIP application approval, the next step will be to take this 40B project to Brewster ZBA.

Harwich. Murray Lane.  We have just been issued our building permits for the project. Next we will put in the 6 foundations.  If all goes as planned, we will raise walls at Murray Lane in May or June 2021. Applications for the homes were opened on October 1, 2020.

Falmouth. Willett Way.  Building permits have been submitted for this 10-home project.  When the permits are issued we will put in the foundations. We will raise walls at Willett Way in June 2021 (6 homes) and May 2022 (4 homes).

We continue our assessment of a number of sites in towns across the Cape. We are always on the lookout for suitable sites for Habitat homes. If you would like to consider the donation of a parcel of property, or know of a town owned site that might be suitable, please contact Beth Wade, Director of Land Acquisition & Project Development, at [email protected] or leave a message at

Events
Habitat Cape Cod is honored to be a part of Cape Cod Climate Change Collaborative’s Virtual NET ZERO 2020: Reimagine, Rebuild, Renew: Jumpstarting a Clean, Green & Inclusive Economy for Cape Cod & The Islands on Friday, October 23rd. Please consider attending and hearing a presentation by Habitat’s own Beth Wade and Bob Ryley on the feasibility to build affordable homes with NetZero approach. The virtual event begins at 8:30am and ends at 3:30pm. Bob and Beth present from 10:45am to 11:10am. Register for this free event here.
Although COVID-19 has limited volunteers' ability to be on our build sites, we are still moving forward with an aggressive building campaign. We need your help to raise $50,000 this month for our 2020 Habitat Virtual Build.

You can help us by making a donation of the cost of nails, windows, doors, counters, sinks, shingles, etc. and ‘build’ the house.

Calling all gardeners!
We are looking for gardeners who want to show off their pretty gardens and help raise funds for Habitat. We would like to participate in next summer’s Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival. If interested, please contact [email protected].
Our 3rd Annual Ride for Homes in September raised over $118,000! A heartfelt thank you to our Riders, Donors, Sponsors, Volunteers, and Staff; we could not have done it without you!!!

See you in 2021 for more fun, more people, burgers and beers!

Ride for homes participant volunteer Ed Ebert exceeded his mission to raise $50,000 by participating in the ride to sponsor an affordable veterans build home in honor of volunteer Bob Harding (USMC), a WWII veteran who volunteered with us until he was 95 years old, and sadly passed away last year. Thank you to Ed and everyone who donated to help Ed reach his goal.

We are deeply grateful to The Ridge Club's management and members for participating in a member only Home in One Golf Day to benefit Habitat in September.

Thank you to Habitat Board Member Steve Jenney and Eileen Kennedy for organizing this event raising that raised over $28,000.

A BIG thank you to our sponsors: Shepley Wood Products, Andersen Windows, Oceanside Restoration, and Dowling & O’Neil Insurance Agency. We could not have done it without you!

If you are interested in hosting a similar golf event at your club to benefit Habitat Cape Cod, please contact Adrianne Wytas at [email protected].
Monthly Giving
Did you know that you can set up your donation to Habitat Cape Cod by giving monthly? This is a great and easy way to give critical funds to ensure our home building stays on target every month.

As an example, sometimes it is much easier to give $25 a month instead of a lump sum of $300. We will charge the card of your choosing each month until you want to stop, get a new card, or need to change the amount at any time.

“There are a couple of reasons for monthly amounts. First, it is easier than writing one large check at the end of the year when we get requests from many charities. Second, it makes it automatic so we don’t forget. Third, it provides Habitat Cape Cod with reliable steady income throughout the year.
Habitat Cape Cod is very important to life on Cape Cod and we can no longer do the construction work but we can support it financially.” Jake Ketchum, Monthly Donor.
