ProjectsEpsilon Delivers Successful Results to the Solid Waste Industry

For more than 20 years, Epsilon has provided environmental consulting services to the solid waste industry. Our talented professionals provide the needed support to commercial, industrial, and municipal clients to obtain the required environmental permits and approvals for a range of solid waste facilities. As landfills throughout the Commonwealth deal with a variety of issues including permitting compliance as well as closure needs, Epsilon navigates through an often-complicated permitting process.

Epsilon is currently assisting with several landfill closure projects including landfills in Belmont, Haverhill, Hopedale, Lynn, and Winchendon.

Haverhill Municipal Landfill - The City of Haverhill and Aggregate Industries jointly own this site. Epsilon is performing the wetland, ecological services, and environmental permitting for this municipal landfill closure project, which is subject to an Administrative Consent Order. Epsilon delineated wetland resource areas on-site and secured concurrence of wetland resource area boundaries from the Haverhill and Groveland Conservation Commissions. Epsilon is assisting with the preparation of the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) Environmental Impact Report to document compliance and secure MEPA approval for site closure actions. The site abuts the Merrimack River, which increases the degree of difficulty due to the environmental constraints associated with river including wetlands, flood plain, public trust lands and state-listed species habitat.

Lynn Landfill Cap Repair Project - The Lynn Landfill is located on filled tidelands abutting Lynn Harbor. The landfill was capped over two decades ago. Inspections found that the portions of the soil cover over the impermeable capping layer had eroded. Epsilon has been providing ecological and permitting services in support of this project. We first delineated on-site wetland resources and secured an Order of Resource Area Delineation to define those boundaries prior to final design. Permitting services included supporting the Environmental Notification Form preparation, preparing the Ch. 91 License application, and Notice of Intent. All permits and approvals were secured on schedule and the cap repair project is in construction.

Prior to joining Epsilon, Dwight Dunk gained extensive experience securing environmental permits for hazardous waste and solid waste projects throughout the Northeast U.S. His experience includes securing environmental permits and approvals for landfill capping and re-use projects - re-use as public parks and golf courses, construction of new landfill cells, hazardous waste remediation, and planning and design of wetland restoration areas - coastal and freshwater - as components of landfill closure and hazardous waste remediation projects.

Epsilon Historic Preservation Projects Recognized by Preservation Massachusetts

Epsilon's historic preservation group has been busy helping clients secure much needed historic tax credits to help in the financing of rehabilitation projects throughout the state. Each year Preservation Massachusetts recognizes projects that represent the best in historic preservation.

Epsilon is pleased to have provided historic preservation consulting services to eight projects being recognized this year.
  • Abby's House in Worcester
  • Boston Volvo Village in Boston
  • The Central Building in Worcester
  • Pratt Memorial Library Building in Shelburne Falls
  • 161 & 162 Federal Street in Salem
  • Soldier On in Pittsfield
  • Abbot Mill II in Westford
  • Thorndike Exchange in Lowell
This year, Preservation Massachusetts expanded the 2020 awards celebration with a virtual multimedia event. It takes place over the course of two weeks starting on October 12 and culminating with the live, virtual awards ceremony on October 22.

Ask An Air Quality Expert
Let Epsilon answer your air quality questions. The regulations that govern air pollutants are often a significant issue that facilities struggle with either during the preconstruction stage or during operation. Air quality regulations can affect even some of the most unassuming facilities, as they vary by source and can be quite stringent. We are able to guide clients through the rapidly changing landscape of air quality standards and regulatory requirements.

Have a question about air quality regulations? Check in with Principal Steve Slocomb, PE who will be live on LinkedIn on Tuesday, October 27. Unable to make that date, you can email or call directly at 978.461.6214.
EventsWhere We've Been (And Where We're Going)
As organizations take their events virtual, Epsilon has remained active in many events as moderators and speakers. These virtual events have been great to help us to stay up to date with the current industry trends and stay connected with colleagues.

Presented & Moderated - In mid-July, Epsilon Principal and Chair of the Environmental Business Council (EBC) Energy Resources Committee, Marc Bergeron, served as the Co-Moderator of the EBC's Second Annual New England State Energy Leaders Virtual Conference. This well-attended event brought together the energy leaders from each of the six New England states. It provided an opportunity for each state to review their respective energy plan, program priorities, and implementation strategies and included a discussion on the ways the states are working together on regional energy issues.

On September 17, Managing Principal Rob O'Neal spoke at Electric Power Research Institute webinar. He spoke during the session on Environmental Aspects of Wind that was part of a weeklong event Virtual Generation Program Advisory Meetings - Fall 2020.

At the end of September, Principal Dwight Dunk presented during the virtual National Coastal & Estuarine SummitHis panel used two case studies to present lessons learned for planning, permitting, designing and constructing successful shoreline resiliency projects.

Virtually Exhibited Epsilon virtually exhibited at the AWEA Offshore WINDPOWER Conference, which took place in October. This two-day conference included educational and virtual networking opportunities all focused on the emerging offshore wind industry. Ted BartenRob O'Neal, Maria Hartnett, Holly Johnston, and Abbey Nack listened in on a variety of sessions and helped staff our virtual booth.

Our upcoming events include:
