What's Happening in October

2021 National Blue Ribbon School

We were thrilled to learn that the U.S. Department of Education named Pugliese West Elementary a 2021 National Blue Ribbon School! West was one of only 16 schools in the state of Ohio and 325 schools nationally to receive this prestigious designation.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private K-12 schools that are either academically superior in their state or that demonstrate dramatic gains in student achievement.

Mrs. Gorman and third grade teacher Mrs. Wicker will attend the Blue Ribbon Ceremony in Washington D.C. in November to represent Pugliese West Elementary. Congratulations to our staff, students and families! #NationallyTheBest

Please tune in to the West YouTube Channel for important information from your child's classroom teacher.

Unfortunately, this is taking the place of our annual face-to-face grade level meetings.

On Friday's We Wear Pink!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer.

We have been selling Pink bandanas at West to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Bandanas cost $5 and may be worn every Friday during the month of October at West! Students may wear their bandana any way they would like to as long as it is safe and does not distract from the academic setting.

If your child would like to purchase a pink bandana they may do so in their homeroom class.

Blue Ribbon Celebration

Date: October 15th

We will be having a Blue Ribbon Celebration for our students on Friday, October 15th during the school day. There will be games, inflatables and treats to eat! Please let us know if you would like to volunteer to help on this day by emailing Mrs. Gorman. Thank you!

Fire Prevention Week

The Steubenville Fire Department will be here to show off their cool fire trucks and to speak to West students about Fire Safety!

Please take the time to talk to your child about the family plan for evacuating at home in the event of a fire.Please make sure your home has working smoke detectors. Working Smoke Detectors save lives!

Parent Teacher Conferences

Date: October 20th & 21st

Day: Wednesday & Thursday

Parent-Teacher Conferences are by appointment only. Please look for an RSVP card to come home soon!

Halloween Fun at West

Date: October 29th

Day: Friday

Students may wear a costume for a $1 donation to the United Way of Jefferson County!
Ice Cream Floats will sold at Lunch for $1
All classes will be treated to Pop Corn and a Movie

Make-Up Picture Day

Date: November 2nd

Day: Tuesday

Any student who did not get a picture or did not like the picture they purchased can have a Make-Up Picture done on this day. Uniforms must be worn.

If you have any paper box tops at home, please send them in as soon as possible. We will be sending our last paper submission in at the end of October. Thank you for supporting Pugliese West!

State Testing-3rd Grade ELA

Ohio Department of Education

Week of October 18th, 2021

3rd Grade Ohio English Language Arts (ELA) Assessment

Third grade students will be taking the state English Language Arts assessment the week of October 18th.

This is a very important test for third graders across the state of Ohio, as students must pass the state test in order to be promoted to fourth grade.

The state calls this the Third Grade Guarantee.

Because this test is taken on the computer we are asking that you expose your third graders to the practice test at home. Most students will need to practice using the computer to be prepared for the test. This includes use of the mouse to click & drag and general typing.
