October is a month of transition. The warm days of summer are over and the air cools as we firmly enter the autumn months. The days start to get darker earlier. But we're not yet to Thanksgiving and the festive winter holidays of Christmas and Hanukkah. We're still a few months away from the New Year too, which is something I think we are all looking forward to shutting the book on 2020!

Halloween is steadily creeping upon us. It's a day when we scare ourselves, dress up, and maybe actually see more of our neighbors than we normally do, either by handing out candy or taking our children and grandchildren door-to-door.

Unfortunately, Halloween is going to be different this year. In many places trick or treating will be discouraged and costume parties won't be possible.

Rather than being upset, let's think about Halloween differently too. What if Halloween has a deeper meaning? What if Halloween can be about facing monsters and finding that we get something sweet in the end?

Let me explain.

October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Many of you know that I am a breast cancer survivor.

It was the hardest battle of my life. It was my monster to fight. While raising my two boys as a single mother, I had to keep working and still hide the pain and depression behind smiles.

My battle with cancer was an extremely critical time that gave me the knowledge to know how strong I am. Additionally, I am so thankful for those that stood by me during that difficult time. There was so much that we learned together.

I am a proud breast cancer survivor and a believer in coming out of challenges stronger than before!

So, as we pass through this changing season and celebrate Halloween, let's remember that most of us are facing monsters, whether in the form of COVID, or job losses, or cancer, or a thousand other scary challenges. Let's be there for each other. Together we can find the sweet things of life that come from fighting and surviving.

As a team at Doc411, we are thinking this month about all the single parents out there who are navigating the challenges of balancing work and their children's education. The economy is still recovering. Many schools are still doing virtual classes. Single mothers and fathers are daily being divided by the demands of work or finding new work, and helping their children with Zoom and the social isolation of online classes.

We don't have any big solutions, but we did want to let single parents know:

"You have our admiration and respect! You are doing better than you think. Your children see and recognize the sacrifices you are making to keep everything afloat."

Stress can be such a damaging influence in our lives. Remember that you can't change the past. The only thing you can do is understand what the next most important thing is, and focus your energy on that. One action at a time. One interaction at a time.
Additionally, imagine how hard this pandemic has been on our elderly parents. They are not only the most vulnerable population to the illness, but they are suffering from the isolation that we have taken to try and fight the virus's spread.

We need to be safe, and not do in-person visits without the proper precautions, but we can't let these inconveniences keep us from visiting with them, even if that means only connecting with them online. They need to hear from us.

If you have a parent or other elderly relative in your life, call them today. You will brighten their whole week!
Everyone is still trying to make Halloween fun this year! Be a part of it. Look up drive-thru haunted houses and find those activities that you can do with proper precautions. We can't let up now on our fight with COVID-19, but we can be determined to not let it stop us from making memories and enjoying these fun excuses to party!

What are you doing to creatively make Halloween fun despite the challenges of the pandemic?

Have you found an excellent drive-thru haunted house or other safe activity?

Share it with us and we will pass it on to the whole Doc411 community on our Facebook and Instagram pages.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month
It's safe to say that all of us know someone affected by breast cancer. October has been selected as Breast Cancer Awareness Month to increase the conversations about the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, and treatment. Take a few minutes this month to support those in your life who have battled this disease.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October 2: World Smile Day
World Smile Day is about doing small acts of kindness. The motto of the celebration is "Do an act of kindness, and help one person smile!" That sounds simple and doable for each of us. If you missed doing this on the 2nd, pick another day this month and see how small, kind actions can create smiles around you!
October 4: National Taco Day
Last year Americans ate over 4.5 billion tacos. That's enough tacos to stretch all 490,000 miles to the moon and back! Here in California, we have some of the best tacos in the world. This is an easy day to celebrate. Go get some of your favorite tacos, and enjoy!
October 16: National Boss's Day
Have a good boss? Celebrate them on the 16th this month. On that day, employees throughout the United States will be showing appreciation to the bosses that work hard and lead with kindness and fairness. Being a boss isn't easy, but we can all recognize an organization that is well-run and captained by someone who cares!
October 23: National Paralegal Day
We work closely with law firms and we've had so many positive interactions with paralegals that we wanted to make sure this holiday made our list this month. Be sure to let the paralegals you know how much we appreciate their work, often behind the scenes. Thank you!
October 28: National Chocolate Day
Why can't we celebrate chocolate every day?! Chocolate is truly one of the world's favorite treats. On this day, go ahead and celebrate everything chocolate. Be sure and send us photos. We'd love to see how you make this day special.
October 31: Halloween
