Jill's October 2020 Vision:

I run this same column every October because of the positive feedback and inspiration it generates.

May you, too, have a grateful perspective this October:

I once knew a man, an artist, in great despair.
We were discussing the concept of gratitude and the idea that when we take time to reflect on what we have to be grateful about, we open the door for gratitude to come rushing into our lives in greater amounts.
One year, during the season of autumn, I asked this individual what he might be grateful for.
One of this man's greatest attributes is that he speaks thoughtfully. It is an admirable quality.
True to his nature, he took several moments, and then answered, "I am grateful for the color of pumpkins."
It was one of the nicest sentences I've ever heard spoken.
This month, no matter what state of mind you may be experiencing, consider pausing to appreciate the beautiful color of pumpkins.

All good things...

What we're reading this month and why you should too...

"Anatomy of an Illness"
by Norman Cousins

*This is an oldie but goodie!

Published in 1979, the book highlights a patient's (Cousins') collaboration with his physician in order to take charge of his own health after being diagnosed with a crippling and irreversible disease.

Here are my takeaways on this one:

  • It is natural for the human body to heal itself.

  • The efficacy of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in the treatment of serious disease is worth noting.

  • Laughter is literally healing.

I highly recommend this book as a first read for those who've never heard of it and as a re-read for those who have, especially given where the world is at this moment.

October Astrological Forecast

October Sun/Moon Forecast for all Signs:
Two Full Moons this month!

  • Full Moon in Aries (opposite Sun in Libra) Oct 1: Stand in your power/put your needs first. Aries is action, so use this motivation the next two weeks to get what you need accomplished or start new projects before Mercury goes retrograde (Oct 13-Nov 3) shifting the focus to looking within, recharging your batteries and tying up any loose ends on the to-do list.
  • New Moon in Libra (conjunct Sun in Libra) Oct 16: Libra rules relationships, communication and justice.  It strives for fairness and wants everyone to be happy, which can be a tall order to fill.  Find balance between fulfilling yourself and meeting the demands of others and maintaining your values while respecting the opinions of others.  Discern when divisive topics are best to be avoided and when you should use your voice.
  • Full Moon in Taurus (opposite Sun in Scorpio) Oct 31: Happy Halloween! Taurus represents all that is physical (our body/health, finances, our homes and nature) and long-term stability, but above all, self-worth.  How do you measure yourself and your success in life? What practical steps can you take to improve upon yourself and make YOUR world more stable in unstable times?

Essential oils you need to know about...

R.C.™ Essential Oil

A powerful blend in preparation for the chilly days of fall:

Why is this a fall favorite?

  • Spruce, Pine and Eucalyptus help support the respiratory system by reducing irritations in the throat and lungs...like coughing, runny noses and congestion.
  • Cypress supports circulation.
  • Myrtle supports the immune system.
  • Marjoram gives a warming sensation.
  • Lavender is calming.
  • Peppermint is invigorating!

How to Use:

  • Diffuse or rub 1-2 drops directly to your chest when you want to breathe.
  • Place 1-2 drops in your palm, rub both palms vigorously together, cup hands over mouth and nose, then breath deeply.
  • Place a few drops in a hot bath or shower. The warm water will relax and soothe you while the oil will diffuse with the steam for an invigorating and empowering experience.

Dress to Express

The chilly days of fall are here and if you’re like me, you’re not quite ready to go full-on fall dressing. I like to ease into fall by blending my summer staples (think white jeans, denim skirt…) with some of my fall favorites. And remember, it’s absolutely okay to wear white after Labor Day!

  • Pair a lightweight dress with a pair of knee-high boots and/or a faux fur vest.
  • Wear your favorite white denim pants or skirt with a long-sleeved shirt and a cozy poncho.
  • Coordinate a fall-colored tank-- orange, brown or burgundy--with a lightweight cream or tan cardigan and slip on a pair of short beige booties.
  • One of my favorites for a day at home/home office is a jumpsuit paired with a denim jacket and a long necklace. Cute and comfy!

And don’t forget lightweight silk scarves are always good to add a pop of color around your neck or thread it through your pant loops for a sassy belt!

Seasonal Recipe

Sweet Potato Muffins

This recipe is from Gwenyth Paltrow's cookbook, It's All Good, with a few tweaks of my own.

Peel a freshly baked sweet potato and mash the flesh with a fork. Whisk ½ cup olive oil, ½ cup almond or oat milk, ¾ cup maple syrup and 1 tsp vanilla into the sweet potato. (I use more--you can never have too much vanilla!) In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 cups gluten-free flour with Xanthan gum (or add 1½ teaspoons if the flour doesn't include), 2 tsp baking powder, 2 tsp baking soda, 1½ Tbsp Pumpkin Pie Spice (or nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves) and salt to taste.

Bake at 350 for 12-15 minutes depending on your oven, open the oven door and drizzle maple syrup over the top of each muffin and then bake for another minute. Remove and Enjoy!
Makes the house smell so good on a Saturday or Sunday morning!

Want to tone the back of your arms without using weights?
Do tricep dips on the second to last step on your stairs--legs out straight, one foot on top of the other. Dip down for a set of 15-25. Repeat, switching which foot is on top of the other.

Want more?
Do push-ups with your arms held tight to your body (versus out to the side) focusing on your triceps as you attempt 10-15 reps. This is hard at first. Build up as you go. Give it two weeks to one month and enjoy the results- all by applying your own body weight!
