October 2021
Dear Claudia,
First things first . . . Happy October!
Now that we have your attention, welcome to the new format of our newsletter! The re-design was long in the making and in response to the fact that the majority of our readers are accessing the newsletter on a mobile device (or tablet). You will see some slight formatting changes to make it more mobile-friendly, but the content will remain the same. We hope you enjoy the new format as well as the news.
Now that the peak foliage is behind us, we can begin the mental and physical preparation for winter, and to do that, we get through one of my favorite times of the year: what Vermonters fondly call Stick Season. It's the time of year when we stack wood, tune skis, replenish our larders, plug in the crock pot, and pull out our fleece and long underwear.
Wishing you and yours a quiet, happy and healthy Stick Season!

Time Change = Change Your Batteries
|
The end of Daylight Savings Time (Sunday, November 7) is the perfect time to change the batteries in your smoke/fire and carbon monoxide detectors.
Did you know that:
- Two-thirds of home fire deaths result from broken smoke alarms. Check your smoke alarms when you change the clock.
- Smoke alarms with non-replaceable 10-year batteries are designed to remain effective to up to 10 years. If the alarm beeps, warning that the battery is low, replace the smoke alarm right away.
- Make sure to always replace your smoke alarm every 10 years. Don’t see a date on the back? Replace it!
- Your fire fighters recommend you install a smoke alarm in every bedroom, outside of bathrooms, near stairwells and on each floor of your home.
- For best protection, interconnect all smoke alarms. When one alarm sounds, they all sound.
- Check your smoke alarms when you change your clocks for Daylight Saving Time. Press and hold – you should hear a loud beep if it is good.
- More than 400 people die each year in the United States from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. When you install smoke alarms, install carbon monoxide detectors.
- Install carbon monoxide detectors where you install smoke alarms. If the audible trouble signal sounds, first check for low batteries. If the battery is low, replace it. If it still sounds, call the fire department.
For more information see the International Association of Fire Fighters site (link here).

Vermont Real Estate Continues Surge
|
A July 2021* analysis of real estate market activity for the first half of 2021 showed that things are still booming! With demand higher than ever and inventory at historic lows, it's been an exciting opportunity for sellers and a frustratingly tight market for buyers.
We share the data below as a snapshot of market activity. You'll see that:
- Sales prices are still rising
- Inventory is shrinking (in most sectors)
* Most recent data available at press time.

I have a new favorite recipe for Apple Crisp! It's actually an old recipe, but new to me and super easy. I have made two adjustments (reflected below) to reduce the sugar and nutmeg... and, with these two tweaks, I think it has the perfect amount of tartness and sweetness with a nice oatmeal crumble on top. All credit to Betty Crocker (TM).
Betty Crocker's Apple Crisp
-
4-6 medium-sized tart cooking apples, peeled and sliced (about 4 cups)
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 cup Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup quick-cooking or old-fashioned oats
- 1/3 cup butter, softened
- 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1) Heat oven to 375°F. Grease bottom and sides of an 8-inch square pan with butter or shortening. (Note: a glass baking dish is best)
2) Spread apples in pan. In medium bowl, stir remaining ingredients until well mixed; sprinkle over apples.
3) Bake about 30 - 40 minutes or until topping is golden brown and apples are tender when pierced with a fork.
4) Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream.
P.S. This recipe doubles easily and perfectly fits in a 9x13 baking dish.
