Celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

This year we mark the 76th anniversary of the observance of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which Congress established to recognize the contributions of Americans with disabilities and to encourage all citizens to ensure equal opportunity in the workforce. This year is also the 31st anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which is a landmark civil rights legislation designed to increase access and opportunity for people with disabilities across the nation, including in employment.

October 12, 2021 - Justice and the Jury System
Please join The Hartford and the George W. Crawford Black Bar Association for a panel discussion entitled, Justice and the Jury System on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 at 6:30 PM, held virtually. The panelists will discuss how race, ethnicity, age, and gender affect the function, selection and decision making of jury panels in civil and criminal court, and in the state and federal courts of Connecticut before and since the pandemic began. There will also be a discussion and Q&A portion from the attendees.
 
The panelists include Attorney Brian Beverly, Shareholder of Young Moore and Henderson, P.A., Attorney Aigné Goldsby, Principal Attorney of Goldsby Law, LLC and former committee member of the Connecticut Judicial Branch Jury Selection Task Force, Attorney Scott Jones, Supervising Public Defender for the New Haven J.D. Superior Courthouse. Judge Courtney Chaplin, Superior Court Judge of the Windham J.D. Superior Courthouse, will moderate the panel discussion.

Connecticut General Assembly

The Connecticut General Assembly's nonpartisan legal services office seeks full-time staff attorneys and full-time temporary attorneys for an exciting opportunity in a dynamic environment. Primary responsibilities are working with legislators in drafting legislation and serving as legal counsel to one or more legislative committees. Additional responsibilities include providing related legislative legal services, indexing, and codifying public acts for publication, and reviewing proposed state agency regulations.

For full-time staff attorneys, starting salary is $85,693, plus excellent health insurance, retirement and other fringe benefits. For full-time temporary attorneys, position term is January 2022 to May 2022, at a per diem salary of $314.

Required Skills and Ability:
Requires superior writing and analytical skills, thoroughness, accuracy and attention to detail, strong interpersonal and teamwork skills, and initiative. Must perform excellent work under tight deadlines and be willing and able to work very long hours during legislative sessions. Center for Children's Advocacy

The Center for Children’s Advocacy (CCA), the largest children’s rights organization in New England, seeks a dynamic attorney for its Immigrant Children’s Justice Project (ICJP). CCA is a non-profit organization dedicated to enforcing the legal rights of low-income children. More information about the Center can be found on CCA’s website: www.cca-ct.org.
 
The ICJP is the primary source of life-saving legal services for immigrant children and youth in Connecticut. The Project provides legal representation, training and system reform advocacy to help immigrant children and youth gain immigration status and access systems that provide them with critical health, education and support services. This opening is for a full time attorney who will have the opportunity to advocate for immigrant children and youth through a wide variety of strategies. The attorney will:
 
  • Provide legal consultation and representation to immigrant children and youth regarding Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, other immigration options, access to education as English Language Learners (ELLs) and special education students.
  • Provide legal rights training to immigrant youth, families, advocates and community providers.
  • Collaborate with CCA’s Communications Director to produce legal information materials for youth and community providers.
  • Collaborate with other immigrant advocacy organizations to bring information and legal services to immigrant youth.
  • Collaborate with other CCA attorneys, outside immigrant advocacy organizations and community providers to identify systemic problems that impact immigrant youth and engage in system reform advocacy, including litigation, administrative advocacy and legislative advocacy as necessary, to address the identified problems.
 
Candidates should have:
  • Cultural competence, experience with children and youth of color and a demonstrated deep commitment to social justice and racial justice is required. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Two or more years of related experience. Immigration experience is preferred.
  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred
  • Must be admitted to CT Bar or have ability to waive in.
