October 2021 GUEST NEWSLETTER
October 13 -
Flash Fiction Bootcamp
presented by MIW member Melody Highman. Want to know more about this quickly evolving genre? Learn how to pack a punch in 50 – 1,000 words and strengthen your writing muscle, no matter your current shape.  Cross-training for newbies, wannabes, and seasoned writers of all genres.
The meeting will begin with a fun ice breaker. Riffing off a prompt, we will go around the room and everyone will add a few words to the story (so it's all verbal). Then, the presentation will be mostly educational so people get a better idea what flash fiction is and how it can help build writer muscle with lots of examples to share.
Un-vaccinated people are asked to Mask Up for the meeting
Meeting ID: 869 6152 1997; Pass-code: 919130

WRITING EXERCISE CHALLENGE!
Members, are you up for it?

Build your writing muscle through flash fiction [a tiny story]. MIW members who attend this October meeting are on their way to building their writing muscle. How about you? Use this monkey prompt and spend about 15 minutes scribbling out the story it sparks. You can then submit to MIW Anthology.

OR...polish your flash fiction stories from our July meeting.
OR...If you weren’t at the meeting use any inspiration as the prompt to craft a tiny story.

Please submit by December 10 to the anthology committee. [email protected]. Be sure to note ‘Flash Fiction Submittal’ in the Subject line. Several will be chosen to appear in the anthology. ALL will be reviewed and returned with suggestions for you to apply more polish and resubmit for publication in the anthology, if you wish, or just keep for your personal library.
BOOK OF THE MONTH, OCTOBER 2021
Ex-CIA operative & successful Washington D.C. attorney Lexie Heydon, returns home to find an invasion with nothing stolen. Surveillance and listening devices have been aimed at Lexie as well as her parents in Northern Virginia. The reasons become clear when the family is notified that her twin brother, Bryan, also CIA, is stranded in Iraq, carrying damaging proof of Saddam Hussein's lethal chemical weapons program.
Bonnie Bee grew up as a ranch girl in Northern California who fulfilled her youthful desire to travel, eventually touching all seven continents. She uses her adventures, as well as those of her CIA brother, to weave stories of the outdoors, survival and spy-intrigue. As an actress, writer, producer, director, mother of six and grandmother of many, she lives with her retired doctor husband on an island off the Gulf Coast of Florida.

MARCO ISL. FARMER'S MARKET, WE NEED YOUR HELP!
This year Marco Island has decided to hold the Farmers Market at Mackle Park, because the Veterans Community Park location is undergoing major renovation. The number of vendor spaces will be limited to about 20 which is a lot fewer than the Veterans Community Park was able to accommodate, almost 100 spaces.
Our chairman Rich believes this new venue will probably generate fewer customers. He has submitted MIW's application anyway and expects to learn whether we are approved or not in early November.
Please let Rich know via email [email protected] whether you are interested in participating in this year’s market given the new venue. If we cannot generate sufficient interest, we may choose to not participate even if our application is approved.

NEW PUBLICATIONS:

SURGEON & LOVER, FULLFILLMENT & FOLLY

Need a photograph of a real person for your work? Two things to consider. Who owns the copyright (the photographer, most of the time!)? Does the person photographed have a right of privacy/right of publicity against your use? It’s not just a copyright question.
Best: Take your own and get a release.

Melody's best blog recommendation: I’ve read dozens of “how-to-write” books by everyone out there, Janice Hardy has the teaching gift; a knack for making a writing principle simple and clear, providing tons of examples to illustrate her point(s). It’s my go-to when I am trying to understand a concept or need a refresher. Fiction University, Click Here
