Frances Contreras named third dean of UCI School of Education
Dr. Frances Contreras, who is widely acclaimed for her research on academic diversity and access from preschool to the Ph.D., has been appointed dean of the UCI School of Education, following a nationwide search. She will assume her new role on Jan. 1, 2022.

CFEP: 25 Years of Impact
The Center for Educational Partnerships (CFEP) – a robust unit within the School of Education – creates collaborations that support student preparation for and success in higher education. Over the next month, we are sharing 25 stories in honor of the people, programs and partnerships that have helped impact millions of students, teachers and families over the past quarter century.
Profs. receive IES grant to train underrepresented undergraduates in education analytics, data science
“Our mission is to support minoritized students, as well as those from diverse backgrounds that are currently underrepresented in educational data science and learning analytics fields,” said Associate Professor June Ahn.
Research team receives NIA grant to help mitigate effects of ​age-related cognitive decline and hearing loss
A five-year, $2.6 million grant will test the benefits of a music-based intervention on speech-in-competition abilities in an older adult population, including individuals that may be at risk of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
Prof. Rossella Santagata awarded NSF grant to enhance understanding of student thinking in mathematics “proof-transition courses”
The project will design and investigate the efficacy of a video-annotation curriculum centered on teacher noticing and responsive and equitable mathematics instruction.
Prof. Sandra Simpkins receives NSF grant to study math and science motivation
Using seven existing data sets, Simpkins and her research team will explore who is motivated to pursue mathematics and science, what sustains students’ motivation, and if those processes vary across development and historical time.
Study shows Ethnic Studies course led to increase in high school graduation and college matriculation
“Providing students with environments that affirm their identities and center experiences of communities of color, while also giving students an opportunity to grapple with challenging issues like racism and inequality, had lasting academic benefits in ways that few other interventions have," said Assistant Professor Emily Penner.
Profs. receive Faculty Mentorship Award for Inclusive Excellence
“Both Dr. Susanne Jaeggi (left) and Dr. Adriana Villavicencio have made exemplary contributions in supporting the success of underrepresented minorities in the School of Education’s academic programs and research mission,” said Elizabeth Peña, professor and associate dean of faculty development and diversity.
Modest Supports for Sustaining Professional Development Outcomes over the Long Term
Longitudinal research funded by the NSF and conducted by Professor Judith Sandholtz (in collaboration with Cathy Ringstaff at WestEd) investigated the value of professional development tune-ups for teachers. Watch the findings.

First-Year Research Poster Presentations 2021
Second-year doctoral students completed their first year of research throughout the pandemic and, on September 24, 2021, presented at the School of Education's annual poster session, a hallmark of the doctoral program.

The CFEP's programs support K-12 teacher and student development, transfer students, and UCI undergraduates from all majors. With the support of the CFEP, the School of Education is creating opportunities for students to achieve the American dream.
