Kristin De Guzman

Kristin and her husband, Aljay moved to Sarasota last year from Northern Virginia. They have a daughter, Hannah, who is a 1st grader at Laurel Nokomis, and my son, Jack, will be joining the LNS family next year as a kindergartner. Kristin works remotely full-time as a meeting planner for a trade association outside of Washington, DC. She is very eager to get involved in the LNS community and work together with other families to make everyone’s experience a great one, including students, teachers, staff, and administration.

Aaron Schmerbeck

Aaron currently has two children that attend LNS; a son in 8th grade and a daughter in 4th. He also has one more little guy, still at home. Aaron is originally from Rochester, New York, but after getting a job where he could work anywhere in South Florida, he settled on Venice, mainly because of the school system and the small-town feel. Aaron received his Ph.D. at Florida State University (Go Noles!), and has a background in Economics and Finance. In his spare time, he likes to spend time with his family, watch college football, play golf and help people better understand their finances.

PTO Fundraising Efforts

Fundraising-Tree _1_.jpg

The PTO works hard every year to be able to provide funds for our amazing school, teachers, staff and students. However, with the rise of COVID and continued restrictions due to the pandemic, we are unable to fundraise as much as we normally do. To this end, we started a GoFundMe with a goal of $20,000.

If you are able to donate to our school, please do! There is no amount too small!

If you are unable to donate at this time, it would be extremely helpful to share our GoFundMe link on social media, with an encouraging note for others to donate.

If you have donated already, THANK YOU! Your donation is greatly appreciated! So far, we have raised $7,835.00!

Here is the link to our GoFundMe: https://gofund.me/a0b46bec

On-Going Fundraisers Sponsored by the PTO

Box tops 2.jpg

New and improved! No more clipping! You can now download the Box Tops for Education mobile app. Once you download the app, find "Laurel Nokomis School," shop as you normally would, then simply scan your store receipts to find participating products. The app will then automatically credit your school's box tops to earnings online. Scanning your receipts needs to be done no later than 14 days from the purchase. It's neve been easier to help our school earn funds for education. Download the app today!

Help support LNS by going to Amazon Smile and designating Laurel Nokomis PTO as your charitable organization. After that, the Amazon Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price to LNS on Amazon shopping done through the AmazonSmile portal. It costs you nothing and your Amazon shopping experience will be the same (wish lists and preferences carry over to the portal).

Technology News

A note from Ms. Schlotterback:

Did you know that LNS has its own in-house crew to help you with small projects? Calling themselves the Ubertechnics, this group of skilled technology students are available to do simple installations and building projects. They relish the opportunity to put their practical skills of measuring, reading directions, using hand tools and problem solving to enhance their on-the-job competences and save you time. Here are Mackenzie Lynn, Kiara Mendoza-Salcedo, James Michel and Dustin Walker on their first assignment: hanging plastic wall file holders for administration and putting together an office chair for Mrs. Nguyen. Needless to say, their clients were very pleased.

If you want more information or have a job for us, please send an email to Cindy Schlotterback at [email protected] and put Ubertechnics in the Subject Line.

Orchestra & Band News

Orchestra News

Greetings from the wonderful world of music!

Our orchestra students are working hard at some big goals. Beginning students are working on three main goals. Number 1 is music notation reading. Students are using flashcards and timed drills to improve note recognition. Number 2 is left-hand skills. Students are learning to properly form their left-hand to make correct notes. Number 3 is right-hand skills. Students are learning to gently hold a bow and pull beautiful sound out of their instrument. We have started combining these skills a little bit at a time. Advanced and Chamber students are working on Winter Concert music. They have also started learning to use Noteflight which is like a word processor for music notation. They will be creating music that will be performed on the Winter Concert!

Save the date: Monday, December 20 at 7p.m. at VPAC

Band News

Happy Fall! All of our band classes are doing incredibly well in these challenging times! We are making great progress, and our students continue to work hard every day to improve and learn.

Beginners are making better sounds each day, and we just learned how to play “Hot Cross Buns.” If you haven’t heard your child play for you at home yet, please ask to hear this song. They are off to a great start!

The fall season is upon us, and our experienced band students have been working hard in class to prepare a great fall concert performance for you!

Our Fall Concert is Thursday, October 7th at 7pm in our LNS Cafeteria!

Report time for our 1st, 2nd, and 5th period students is 6:30pm in our LNS Band Room.

We hope you are able to attend and join us for some fun, exciting and slightly spooky and silly music to start the Fall!

Our 8th grade band students get to participate in “Little Indian Night” at Venice High School. This is a wonderful opportunity gives our band students a chance to see how the Venice High School band plays an important role at football games, and how much fun it can be to be a part of the High School Marching Band!

This will count as a performance grade for our 8th grade students, and is a GREAT way for our students to see what marching band is all about at VHS.

Mr. Wing, the band director at VHS, does a great job and each year our students look forward to this event.

It’s so much fun to see the students from LNS, VMS and VHS join together and play music, watch and perform the halftime show, and make new friends at all of the schools.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email Ms. McKenzie.

Modern Band News

Modern Band is off to a great start with the 3rd, 4th an 5th grade classes. All of the classes have learned C Major, A minor and F Major Chords on the Ukulele. Those students have learned the Easy G Major Chord, Easy C Major Chord and the Easy E minor Chord

Grades K, 1st and 2nd are working on body movement to a steady beat, singing simple songs and playing classroom instruments. 2nd grade is beginning to read and play Quarter Notes.
