Fall quarter is in full swing and we are back in person. It has been great to witness the campus’s energy and the face-to-face interaction with students. Our faculty have continued to strive in their endeavors and earn recognition for their accomplishments.
Professor Jack Brouwer was named Chancellor’s Fellow this past summer. He was acknowledged for his recent achievements in world-class contributions to knowledge in the renewable-energy field. His work on the future of the smart grid and the importance of energy storage is highlighted in this newsletter. Associate Professor Haithem Taha and his graduate student Cody Gonzalez, recently published “A Variational Theory of Lift” in the Journal of Fluid Mechanics that fundamentally changes how we understand flight. Distinguished Professor Tryphon Georgiou traveled to the University of Rwanda last spring to participate in the Quantum Leap Africa program to train innovators in information technology and science. There, he presented a course on Methods from Control and Dynamical Systems.
Our faculty and students continue to conduct important research and obtain academic recognition each quarter. This dedication highlights the beginning of another successful year, and I look forward to sharing many more accomplishments with you in the near future.
Best regards,
Roger Rangel
