Dear John,
"Finding the Teacher in Me"
Why did you become a teacher? This is an important question as all schools struggle with a dwindling teacher pipeline. There is much discussion around the country about how we "hold up" the teaching profession. In our conversations here in Indiana, we've been thinking about how we can grow our teacher pipeline from within. How do/can our schools promote the vocation of teaching?
INPEA is calling on all schools to find ways for students to find "The Teacher in Me." This could be planning activities that highlight the vocation of teaching or taking one day when all teachers are encouraged to share their vocation of teaching story with their students. It's all about planting seeds! Have a Teacher Shadow Day. Highlight teacher vocation stories in your school communications. Let's get creative and share with students what a wonderful career teaching can be. When you teach, you can change lives!
As we look to growing teachers from within, INPEA is working with two INPEA Business Partners, Ivy Tech Community College and Marian University, to help students take the next step in exploring the vocation of teaching. Whether it be through a formal teacher cadet program or simply another dual credit opportunity, Ivy Tech will be offering dual credit education courses for high school students. Since many of our teachers have a master's degree in education, they will be qualified to teach the courses. In addition, Ivy Tech has a special partnership with Marian University where credits can be transferred and students can earn both a bachelors and masters degree in about three years.
Want to learn more? Join us for a Teacher Pipeline webinar with Marian and Ivy Tech on November 29. More info can be found below in the Save the Date section below.

Indiana Literacy Cadre
Currently, nearly one in five Indiana students cannot achieve proficiency on IREAD-3, the statewide assessment measuring minimal expectations for mastery of foundational skills in reading. Supported by the Center of Excellence in Leadership of Learning (CELL) at the University of Indianapolis and the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE), the Literacy Cadre is working to help Indiana’s students read proficiently by the end of third grade.
To achieve this mission, the Literacy Cadre is developing and implementing collaborative professional development for K-2 educators across the state based on the Science of Reading. School participation will help ensure your students receive the foundational literacy skills they need for lifelong success. The Indiana Literacy Cadre offers comprehensive support for school leadership and instructional coaches, providing in-school training and coaching support to implement the five pillars of reflective reading instruction.
If your school would like to participate, please submit an interest form. Schools interested in participating in the IDOE Literacy Grant must express interest through this link. Expressing interest does not guarantee approval for participation.
The grant involves funding a full-time literacy coach in the school. In the first year of the two year grant, 2/3 of the coach's compensation will be covered by the grant. In the second year, the school will assume a larger percentage of the compensation. The grant is being managed by CELL. If you have questions, reach out to Karrianne Polkmeek at KPolkMeek@doe.in.gov.
Additional opportunities are also available for a STEM Cadre. Submit an interest form here.

Planning for the 2023 Legislative Session
We continue to gear up for the 2023 legislative session and this month marks the return of our Legislative Liaison Corner (see directly below this section), a segment that you can copy and paste into your school communications. Each month and throughout the legislative session, we will include content you can share with your school community. 2023 is a budget year and it is critical that our schools and families be ready to engage by creating videos, hosting legislators in their buildings, writing thank you notes, and going to the Statehouse when testimony is needed.
As always, we ask schools to appoint a legislative liaison and set two public policy goals. We will be conducting legislative training sessions across the state in November and December for school leaders and families. Please encourage your school leaders and stakeholders to participate.

INPEA: a Hoosier Voice for Quality Education
Established in 1974, the Indiana Non-Public Education Association (INPEA) has grown into a membership association representing 12 jurisdictions, up to 400 schools (including ours), 96,000+ students, and 7,700 educators. INPEA has become the voice of non-public schools in Indiana but YOUR help is needed during the upcoming legislative session, which will begin in January.
Preparing for the 2023 Legislative Session
- As we head into the upcoming election on November 8, if you live in a district with a state senate or house race, research the candidates’ views on school choice and education. Be sure you understand where each candidate stands on issues that could impact non-public schools like ours.
-
As we approach the legislative session, there are many ways you can engage, including writing a letter or email to your elected representatives to let them know where you stand on certain issues. Legislators want to make their constituents happy, so if they receive a large amount of communication from their community members on an issue, they will listen. You can easily send a message to your elected representatives via INPEA's Legislative Action Center here. If there are certain bills that are very important to address, INPEA will include a special message on this page with information about the bill.
- Make sure you can explain school choice and have developed an “elevator pitch” about why it’s important to your family and all Hoosier children!

The Cat Sat on the Mat: The Thrill of Reading Decodable Texts
By Dr. Anne Elsener
Marian University Center for Vibrant Schools
Using the word “thrill” to describe reading a decodable text with sentences like “The cat sat on the mat” may seem like an oxymoron, but to a beginning reader they can be enjoyable to read. A decodable text can provide readers with an opportunity to successfully decode words in a story because it contains phonics patterns they have mostly been taught. In what follows, I’ll describe how reading decodable texts can help readers increase the words they can recognize by sight. This piece ends with resources for finding decodable texts online.
Download Dr. Elsener's full resource to share with your reading teachers here. You will want to share this!

National Assessment of Educational Progress
The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what America's students know and can do in various subject areas. The results provide educators, policymakers, elected officials, and parents across the country with invaluable information regarding how our children are doing compared to other children in participating large urban districts, other states, and the nation.
If your school is ever selected to participate, we encourage you to do so!
During the 2022-2023 school year, the NAEP schedule includes the Long-Term Trend (LTT) Mathematics and Reading assessment at age 13 in fall 2022, as well as a field test at grades 4, 8, and 12 in spring 2023. The NAEP long-term trend age 13 assessments (mathematics and reading) are now in their second week of data collection. Public and private school students all across the country are taking these assessments through December 16, 2022. You can learn more about these assessments at https://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/participating/private_nonpublic.aspx.
Results from the NAEP 2022 mathematics and reading assessments at grades 4 and 8 (administered between January and March 2022) were released earlier this month and can be found at www.nationsreportcard.gov or www.nagb.gov.
