On Tuesday, November 29, Lake Superior State University is participating in Giving Tuesday, which is a global generosity movement centered around a simple idea: to encourage people to do good. This year we hope to raise $5,000 in support of the Bud Mansfield Student Emergency Fund from Tuesday, November 29 through Sunday, December 4. More details on how you can support will be shared soon.

Distinguished LSSU Alumna Sophie Chandauka MBE Offered Advice on Career Success on Oct. 20, 2022

One of Lake Superior State University’s most distinguished graduates, Sophie Chandauka MBE, presented on October 20 about her successful career in law and business. Her talk, The Power and Attributes for Career Success in a Global Hybrid World: A Remarkable International Career—from the Soo to Wall Street and Big Tech, offered advice to area students and others on how to succeed in today’s complex professional market.

Chandauka graduated from LSSU in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in political science–pre-law. She was the student respondent for her graduating class at commencement. As a Rotary Exchange student from Zimbabwe, she had graduated high school from St. Mary’s College in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. After completing her undergraduate degree at LSSU, Chandauka studied law at Oxford University and the College of Law in England. Having spent much of her career in England, she is now based in New York City.

Throughout her career, Chandauka has been a campaigner for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Currently, she is head of Americas risk management and intelligence for Meta, the parent company for Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Oculus. Chandauka also is a strategic advisor to Morgan Stanley’s African and Caribbean Business Alliance, head of race equity strategy for the 30% Club, and a member of The Executive Leadership Council. In 2021, she was honored by the late Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and appointed as a Member of the British Empire (MBE) for services to diversity in business. Chandauka has served on a numerous non-profit boards, including Sentebale, which was founded by Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex.

During her talk, Chandauka spoke about the opportunities and challenges she has faced throughout her career and how she has been able to use them to her advantage in her dealings with international businesses. She also shared some insight on recruiting talented individuals and developing multifaceted teams based on her experiences working with high-profile companies. To finish off her presentation, she went on to explain how she balances a successful career with family responsibilities and other interests, such as being an advocate for diversity and inclusion.

Lake Superior State University was honored to host Whitney Gravelle, president of the executive council of the Bay Mills Indian Community, at its Indigenous Peoples’ Day event held on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2022, in the University Library.

The event was held to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day and highlighted the history of the Bay Mills Indian Community and Tribal nations in the state of Michigan as well as the importance of treaties and sovereignty. The event also featured a recitation of the University’s Land Acknowledgment by LSSU President Dr. Rodney S. Hanley. Lake Superior State University will offer a basic manufacturing continuing education (non-credit) course for adults during the spring 2023 semester.

The course provides an introduction to fundamentals used in the manufacturing field, such as safety, tools, measurement, metals, cutting, speed and feed, manual mills and lathes, interpreting diagrams, and CNC (computer numerical control) equipment. The course will run Jan. 25-May 3, 2023, on Wednesdays at 5:30 PM-8:30 PM in The Center for Applied Science and Engineering Technology. Read More.

Center for Freshwater Research and Education

The first fall semester classes in the new Center for Freshwater Research and Education building have begun! Featured here are students in Limnology (studying inland aquatic ecosystems) and Ichthyology (studying fishes). They are gaining hands-on experience in the field and in the lab with the guidance of LSSU Assistant Professor Dr. Jonathan Doubek. Learn More about CFRE and their ongoing research.
LSSU Superior Simulation Center

Earlier this month, LSSU EMS students had the opportunity to experience a real life simulation involving sudden cardiac arrest. They were successful in saving Simman's life! Learn More about the Sim Center at LSSU.

Lake Superior State volleyball player Emily Kalinowski (South Lyon, Mich.) has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Setter of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday, October 24. Read More.
The Lake Superior State volleyball program (3-20, 2-10 GLIAC) earned a 3-0 sweep over the Pride of Purdue Northwest (8-15, 1-11 GLIAC) on Friday for Great Lake State Weekend. Read More.
The Lake Superior State hockey program (0-1-1) picked up a dramatic shootout victory over the Mavericks of Nebraska-Omaha (1-2-1) that will officially go in the record books as a 4-4 tie on Saturday, October 15. Read more.
The Lake Superior State University Men's and Women's Cross Country programs competed at the Lucian Rosa Invitational on Saturday, October 8, hosted by Wisconsin-Parkside. As a team, the men ended the day with a 12th place finish while the women placed 13th in the standings. Read more.
The Lake Superior State University Men's and Women's Golf programs each came away with top-five finishes at the Flyer Intercollegiate, hosted by Lewis University on Monday and Tuesday, October 3 and 4. Read more.
The Lake Superior State hockey program defeated the Nipissing Lakers in dominant fashion by a final score of 6-1 on Sunday, October 2. Read more.
Friends of Laker Hockey
On Tuesday, October 25th some of our top hockey supporters heard from Coach Whitten and his staff on what the day to day recruiting process is like as part of our donor driven Friends of Laker Hockey program. Members also were able to hear from two of our players on how the recruiting process was from their perspective.

Friends of Laker Hockey is a new program that allows some of our top hockey donors inside access and a peek behind the curtain of how Laker Hockey operates.
