Our visiting author series continues throughout the fall term with two more headliners. On Monday, November 7, 2022, at 1 pm, we welcome Bonnie Garmus, author of Lessons in Chemistry, a breakout first novel that has been flying off the shelves. Our final author visit of 2022 will be with Dolen Perkins-Valdez, an accomplished fiction writer. Before she arrives, Lori Rotskoff will lead an in-person Book Discussion: Take My Hand (2022) by Dolen Perkins-Valdez (11552) on Tuesday, December 6, 2022, at 1:15 pm. No homework is one of the perks of Short Stories Live (11425). The next installment in this popular class begins on Thursday, November 3, 2022, at 11 am. A professional actor reads aloud a specially selected short story at the start of class before students then converse about what they just saw and heard. Story selection does not repeat, so students may take this course multiple times (and often do!).

For fans of the short story genre, Marilyn DeRight offers Short Stories of the American West (11391) beginning on Monday, November 21, 2022, at 1 pm. Selections from writers such as Wallace Stegner, Louise Erdrich, Richard Ford, and Lesley Marmon Silko will be emailed to students ahead of class.

For a longer read, cuddle up on your favorite couch and delve into the books that will be discussed in our upcoming single session literature classes. Ellen Witchell's Catching Up with the Classics series on Thursdays at 11 am will bring you back to the turn of the century and earlier with The House of Mirth (1905) by Edith Wharton (11386) on November 3, 2022, David Copperfield (1849) by Charles Dickens (11387) on December 1, 2022, and The Kreutzer Sonata (1889) by Leo Tolstoy (11388) on December 15, 2022.

Harriet Sobol's next two BookTalk classes on Wednesdays at 1 pm will cover A Tale of Two Cities (1859) by Charles Dickens (11394) on November 16, 2022, and There There (2018) by Tommy Orange (11395) on December 14, 2022.

Close out the year with Nicholas Birns in a three-session course on Beowulf in Two Translations and One Retelling (11417) starting Thursday, December 1, 2022, at 10:30 am. Recent translations by Seamus Heaney and Maria Dahvana Headley provide a fresh take on this mythic tale of monsters, dragons, and precarious people perched on the edge of the world and of history. Class will also read and discuss Headley’s The Mere Wife (2018), a contemporary feminist retelling of the Beowulf story.

Leave the gun, take the cannoli in preparation for Kate Hearst's spotlight on The Godfather (Coppola, 1972), Assessing a Classic Fifty Years Later (11487) on Wednesday, November 9, 2022, at 6:30 pm. Explore its cinematic and narrative construction, political and familial themes, and its enduring relevance as a commentary on power and corruption.

Viviane Silvera's Artistry Behind the Film series on Thursdays at 11 am next turns to the romantic comedies and tear jerkers written by Nora Ephron. Her topic for Thursday, November 10, 2022, is When Harry Met Sally (1989) (11374). The week after, on November 17, 2022, she will cover Silkwood (1983), Heartburn (1986), and Sleepless in Seattle (1993) (11375). December's lineup begins with Raging Bull (1980) (11376) on December 1, 2022, and concludes with The Age of Innocence (1993) (11377) on December 8, 2022.

The start date for Personal Essay Writing: A Way to Make Meaning of Your Life (11381) has been postponed until Tuesday, November 8, 2022.

A new four-week session of Postural Therapy Movement (11560) has been added and is open for registration. Class begins on Wednesday, November 16, 2022.
