President's Message

It’s that time of year when the trees explode with color while the shorter days are crisp, and the longer nights are crisper. Our sunrises and sunsets are still gorgeous. We prepare for the seasonal change as we pack away our summer clothes, furniture, beach items, and don our warmer clothes, turn on the heat, replace baseball with football and maybe go apple or pumpkin picking. October is a time of change, and we adapt once again since we are New Englanders.

We at ALL have weathered the storm in a sense and have adapted to the changes of the COVID era as best we could. Many of us are back on campus, back to learning in person, laughing, sharing ideas, and adapting once again just like those who have continued on Zoom have been doing.

Change is a constant of ALL – not just the coordinators and classes offered, but the makeup of the board of directors and committees. Some board members’ terms expire this year, and they need to be replaced. We need a change. Are you ready to step up? We are an organization of volunteers. So, be a part of the change – step up, get involved, make a difference – why not? There is an article later in this newsletter listing the volunteers we need immediately. We look forward to hearing from you.

We Invite You to Submit a Course Proposal
for the Spring 2023 Semester

SUBMIT YOUR SPRING 2023 COURSE PROPOSALS NOW
The Curriculum Committee is pleased to announce that the ALL Course Submission Portal is now open and ready to accept course proposals for the Spring 2023 semester. In addition to our current course offerings of in-person and Zoom classes, we are now accepting Hybrid course proposals.

ALL has purchased DTEN Hybrid technology and installed it in one classroom. Hybrid courses allow coordinators to teach members in‑person and remotely to members at home at the same time. We hope that this new option will allow more students to access our course offerings and give our coordinators more flexibility.

When you submit a course proposal, you now have three distinct choices:
  1. CCCC-Barnstable Campus (ALL rooms C-106 & C-115)
  2. Online Zoom Course
  3. Hybrid - Classroom and Zoom

We encourage new coordinators to contact the ALL office at lifelonglearning@capedcod.edu if you are interested in offering a course in Spring 2023. For our veteran coordinators, you can now access the portal using your email address and password to submit a course proposal.

Back to School Night Social - 2022
back_2_school.jpg

The ALL Fall 2022 Back To School Social was held on October 6 2022 at the Cape Cod Cultural Center.

The Hospitality Committee hosted a very successful Back to School night at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod on Thursday, October 6th. Eighty ALL members attended the first social event of the ALL year, and enjoyed a variety of scrumptious appetizers, a glass of wine or a soft drink as they mingled with old and new ALL friends. Representing the College, President John Cox and VPO Chris Clark updated members on the new Wilkens Science and Engineering Center.

It was good to be back together.

Looking Back and Looking Forward
John Kennedy recently turned 90 . This makes him one of ALL’s most senior coordinators. Over the years he has coordinated numerous courses in history and literature at ALL. This fall he is coordinating two sessions on Sherlock Holmes and co-coordinating the Native American Chronicle with Frank Cuphone.
In this picture John and his wife Patricia celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary at Brax Landing in Harwich Port.

I want to begin and end this conversation with a thank you to all the people I have worked with who have made ALL what it is today. They are the pioneers who have enriched my life and the lives of others.

I originally learned that ALL existed in 2002 when I took a poetry course with Peter Saunders at the Snow Library in Orleans. In a conversation, Peter told me he was also teaching a poetry writing course at the Academy for Lifelong Learning on the Cape Cod Community College campus. I filed that information away. Then in 2003 there was an article in the Cape Cod Times announcing that ALL was having registration. I went to campus and signed up for two courses.

The first class I coordinated was in 2004 and was on the life and legacy of Erik Erikson, the internationally recognized developmental psychologist. I did this course because of Erikson’s long involvement with Cape Cod. Over the years Erikson had lived on the Cape and was involved in many organizations. He had a home in Cotuit as well as Wellfleet and died in Harwich. He is buried in the First Congregational Church Cemetery in Harwich Center.

Over the years, my favorite courses were those about making Shakespeare come alive. I first took that course with Al and Pat Wild. After one semester, I was asked to join them as a co‑coordinator. Eventually I coordinated the course with Barbara Berelowitz and Jack Elwood. This is the course that I have coordinated the most. I also enjoyed coordinating a course with Bob Terrell on the two Roosevelts.  I talked about Teddy and he talked about FDR.

I have co-coordinated other history classes with Ed Sullivan, Dean Troxell, and Frank Cuphone. I see this semester as my swan song for teaching. I celebrated my 90th birthday in June and decided to teach this term so I could say that I taught a course during each decade of my life since I was in my 20’s .  My hope for the future is that ALL will continue to be as meaningful to seniors on the Cape as it has been for me and my wife, for she has enjoyed it as much as I have. ALL has been an important source of close friendships for us both.

We want to pay tribute to the many pioneers who made ALL what it is. This includes Marty and Vivienne Sokoloff, Al and Pat Wild, Jack Elwood, Hilda Whyte, Don Bell and Bob Terrell, just to mention a few.  Dave Acker started Reflections (the ALL literary and art magazine). Jack Elwood was the first editor of the ALL newsletter. Pat Wild was the person who started “January Interim” a program no longer in place but was offered for a number of years. The program originally met at North Street in Hyannis. In 2007 I worked on that program with Dudley Thomas and Aimee Silberman and it was moved to the campus.

I apologize for the many names I may have failed to mention. Once again, my wife and I say thank you to all of you who have made ALL the wonderful institution it is.  We look to a future where it brings similar benefits to other seniors on the Cape.

ALL Coordinator
