Special Events
We're looking for volunteers to... dance!

We'll be doing outreach at the Upper Madison Street Fair on Sunday, October 2, and we'd love for you to join us! From 11:30-12:30 you can dance to Swing Shift, and from 1:00-1:30 DFO will be sponsoring live music and contra dancing at the Main Stage on Madison (at West Lawrence) Street in Albany, with Melanie Axel-Lute calling for George Wilson, Mark Bagdon, and Vonnie Estes. With the Albany Contra running monthly only several blocks away, we want to show the local community what it's all about and encourage folks to try it out. In the neighborhood? In the mood for a Sunday afternoon medley? Come out and dance with us!
🔆💡...And then head down the street for the English Country Dance at 2PM - see below!
New and Noteworthy
Congratulations to our new event organizers for a
successful start to this dance season!
The Albany Contra Dance reopened on Sept 9th with over 70 attendees and an abundance of energy, thanks to the tireless efforts of organizers Kevin Musick, Rindle Glick, Laura Perrault, and Mike Patterson. If you missed opening night, stop in tonight (Friday the 30th) for an encore September contra. Then come right back on October 14th for some more!
Note: Albany Contra is still looking for a band and caller for our October 14 dance! If you're a contra musician or caller and are available to play, please contact [email protected]. We also have openings in our schedule next year- contact us with your availability!
Three's a charm! "New" Adirondack Dance Weekend organizer Harvey Raufman finally got to see this event run on September 16-18, after two years of forced cancellations. Thanks to Harvey and to Laura Perrault for all their hard work over the past 3 years, and congratulations on an amazing event with record-breaking attendance! Harvey notes:
As one of our attendees said, “it was a smashing success”. We came out from under the weight of the pandemic with a big bang and had a very magical weekend. A sold-out group of 200 people spent the weekend in full happy mode with four bands, three callers and a dance instructor. With Contra, English Country and Balfolk, there were lots of dance choices in addition to jamming, singing, boating, hiking, visiting with old friends, making new friends, and visiting & singing at a late night campfire.
All were enjoying the amazingly beautiful setting of the Silver Bay YMCA Retreat Center, which sits right on the shore of Lake George, surrounded by the mountains. It surely was a great way to get back into dancing and community, after such a long hiatus. Check back soon for the 2023 dates. We’ll do it all over again. In the meantime, check out our webpage for photos and videos of the weekend at: www.danceflurry.org/adirondack-dance-weekend.
And next up...

To all of you whose legs have been getting jittery waiting for renewed rhythmic input of fine music imbued with the beat of a good swing tune, the First Friday Swing Dance is back! On Friday, October 7, the Elks Lodge will be filled with the music of Mark Gamsjager and the Lustre Kings. Along with your dancing shoes, be sure to pack your proof of vaccination and an N95/KN95 mask for a resumption of great first Friday swing dancing. (These are the current requirements, which may be revised subject to changing circumstances as the date approaches.) Pre-dance swing lessons are scheduled for 7-8 pm. Dancing commences at 8 and boogies through to 11 pm. The Elks Lodge is at 25 S. Allen St, just one block south of the junction of Madison Ave and Western Ave.
