The INSTE graduating class of 2021-2022 consists of only a handful of students who are scattered between California, Iowa, and Tennessee. We will therefore combine the 2022 graduation with the 2023 graduation which we will celebrate at the Living Word Open Bible Church in Cooper City, Florida in August 2023.

INSTE turns 40 years old in 2022. In order to provide a better venue to celebrate this monumental occasion we are postponing our celebration

until June of 2023. We will be celebrating INSTE’s 40^th birthday at the National Open Bible Convention in (Frisco) Dallas, Texas at the Frisco Dallas Texas at Embassy Suites- June 13-15, 2023.

"I was very young and did not fully understand the scope of what was happening in my world until I became an adult."

The Cambodian Civil War was a civil war in Cambodia fought between the forces of the Communist Party of Kampuchea (known as the Khmer Rouge, supported by North Vietnam and the Viet Cong) against the government forces of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

La Guerra Civil de Camboya fue una guerra civil en Camboya librada entre las fuerzas del Partido Comunista de Kampuchea (conocido como el Jemer Rojo, apoyado por Vietnam del Norte y el Viet Cong) contra las fuerzas gubernamentales del Reino de Camboya.

At last in 1980, Chivoan escaped the killing fields of Cambodia. He found himself a refugee entering the state of Texas. The family that adopted Chivoan and his sister were sponsored by the International Rescue Committee (IRC). The IRC is a humanitarian crisis organization that brought them safe passage to the US.

"As I reflect back, I am convinced that it was the hand of God that reached down to save us from the nightmare of these killing fields. It was nothing short of a miracle that my life was spared, and I’m very thankful to God everyday for it."

Por fin, en 1980, Chivoan escapó de los campos de exterminio de Camboya. Se encontró como refugiado entrando al estado de Texas. La familia que adoptó a Chivoan y su hermana fue patrocinada por el Comité Internacional de Rescate (IRC). El IRC es una organización de crisis humanitaria que les trajo un pasaje seguro a los EE. UU.

In the United States, Chivoan started school in the fifth grade. He was in a class with a girl name Ny Ha. She had a similar history of escaping the killing fields as he did. Later on they would meet again at a college campus in Los Angeles, California. Some could say it was coincidental but Chivoan believes it was providential. 

"As we reconnected with our past, I was very blessed to call her my wife." They were married in August of 2000. "We just celebrated our 22nd anniversary and we’re blessed to have two boys named Timothy, age 19 and Benjamin, age 16."

En Estados Unidos, Chivoan comenzó la escuela en el quinto grado. Estaba en una clase con una niña llamada Ny Ha que tenía un historial similar de escapar de los campos de exterminio como él. Más tarde se reencontrarían en un campus universitario en Los Ángeles, California. Algunos podrían decir que fue una coincidencia, pero Chivoan dice que fue providencial.

Chivoan and Ny Ha were part of a small church that had Bible Study on Friday nights. Shortly after they married, they moved away from their home church. They felt that it was important to open up their home to continue to have Bible Study with others. As the years progressed they saw God moving in the hearts of other families. These families began to open up their homes to host bible studies. Their small groups were meeting for bible study in homes across Diamond Bar, Lake Elsinore, Alhambra, El Monte, and Rosemead (California). 

Chivoan y Ny Ha eran parte de una pequeña iglesia que tenía estudios bíblicos los viernes por la noche. Poco después de casarse, se mudaron de su iglesia de origen. Sintieron que era importante abrir su hogar para continuar estudiando la Biblia con otros. A medida que pasaban los años vieron a Dios moviéndose en los corazones de otras familias. Estas familias comenzaron a abrir sus hogares para albergar estudios bíblicos. Sus pequeños grupos se reunían para estudiar la Biblia en hogares de Diamond Bar, Lake Elsinore, Alhambra, El Monte y Rosemead (California).

After 16 years of gathering in small groups for bible study, they were propositioned to plant a church at the invitation of Dr. Don Bryan. The church planting process was through Pacific Planting Network (PPN).

Chivoan found himself a candidate to pastor a church. And by the grace of God they were given the green light to plant NexGen Church of the Open Bible. On April 21, 2019 they launched their first service in Rosemead, CA. There were about 80 people in attendance.

El proceso de plantación de iglesias fue a través de Pacific Planting Network (PPN). Chivoan se encontró a sí mismo como candidato para pastorear una iglesia. Y por la gracia de Dios se les dio luz verde para plantar la Iglesia NexGen de la Biblia Abierta. El 21 de abril de 2019 lanzaron su primer servicio en Rosemead, CA. Asistieron unas 80 personas.

INSTE was a big component of their discipling program at the launch of NexGen Church. At the beginning, one third of the active members of their church were studying the INSTE program.

NexGen had 18 members of our church that were taking INSTE's Discipleship 1 and 2 courses before the COVID pandemic. In early spring of 2020, interest in INSTE began to slow down. One third of the original group continued their studies with INSTE. Although many of the students would agree, they’ve benefited greatly from the study. Their desire to continue to study was diminished greatly due to a variety of reasons such as changing work schedules to lack of motivation, to the fear of in-person meetings due to COVID.

"We eventually took our INSTE meeting online during the height of the pandemic. [But} for those that held on to their studies, they had built a camaraderie among each other to help encourage each other to finish the course. As we, as a church, continue to disciple new members, the INSTE program will be our main resource to accomplish this goal."
