October 2022 Newsletter

Dear Cristo Rey Miami Family,

We have turned the page and find ourselves in October! It has been three months since the beginning of the Summer Success Institute. During the past few months we have grown as a school and have many moments to celebrate! I was the most proud of our students on September 15th, during the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Cristo Rey Miami students shined! They interacted with corporate partners, community leaders, politicians, and donors and demonstrated their desire to succeed!

In September, we focused on developing organization and time management skills with our students. We encouraged them to check their grades on PowerSchool a few times per week and to work with their teachers towards reaching proficiency and mastery on their major assignments. As we enter this month, our focus will be to continue building our school culture!

The students voted and we will be announcing the official Cristo Rey Miami mascot at the conclusion of our first ever spirit week later this month! Additionally we are excited to welcome all of our families for the first Parent/Teacher Conference Night on October 7th! We are excited to show you our school and the work that the students have done.

As always, feel free to email me at cmunoz@cristoreymiami.org if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Academics

We are excited to welcome our Founding Families for a school tour and parent/teacher conferences. We ask that all parents arrive by 6pm to ensure that you are able to tour the school, meet with teachers, and be present for a presentation by the Principal.  All families who attend will be entered into a raffle for a $50 Publix gift card. If you have any questions, please contact the main office at 305-495-4232.

Last month we shared information about PowerSchool. We hope that you have been able to log into the parent portal. If you have not been able to, please email info@cristoreymiami.org to receive help. Another option is to log into the student portal, which shows student grades and absences. Grades are updated every week by Sunday, please take some time to check your son/daughter's grades each week.

By registering you will be able to receive text/email notifications every time your son/daughter receives a positive or negative entry.  Please take a moment to view the video for instructions on how to register. You will need your son/daughter's student ID number, which has been provided to them.

We are happy to announce and thank the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation for it's generous sponsorship of $10,000 to purchase instruments for our Music Program! We will be incorporating these new instruments into our music classroom during the month of October.

Corporate Work-Study Program

Cristo Rey Miami's Founding Students have now attended work at least five times, and their work has been exceptional!

One of our supervisor's at Paramount provided the following comment, "Nayib has quickly adapted to the new environment. He has had no trouble working in the office environment and does it all while having a great attitude. Very smart and knowledgeable of computer requirements. Very neat and organized in his approach."

Cristo Rey Miami focuses on developing college ready and career prepared students. As a part of our students' career preparation, each student is rated every workday by their supervisor. Supervisors' rate the students on the following categories:

  • Work Efficiency – The ability to complete projects both quickly and accurately
  • Reliability – Ability to work independently; Follows through
  • Willingness to Learn – The ability to accept constructive feedback and develop new skills
  • Adaptability – The ability to retain previous skills and apply knowledge to new tasks
  • Initiative – Level of self-motivation; Seeks additional work
  • Enthusiasm – Eagerness to succeed; Overall attitude
  • Professionalism – Respect for authority in the workplace; Appearance
  • Communication – Ability to engage with the supervisor & staff
  • Teamwork & Collaboration – Cooperation with others in positive working relationships
  • Technical Skills – ability to perform work assignments

These ratings, in conjunction with student timecard submissions, are collectively calculated to determine a student's CWSP grade. On the upcoming Q1 report card, you will notice a letter grade being assigned to CWSP. Please see below for the CWSP grading policy breakdown.

Building School Culture

Friendships are forming! During the last three months students have grown closer together. As they have grown their friendships we are proud that they have utilized their positive relationships to create positive change in the world!  Our school values are faith, purpose, and service. On September 30th, Cristo Rey Miami High School students participated in a food distribution drive at St. Augustine Church, and clearly demonstrated what it means to be young men and women of service to society.
