HUDSON VALLEY WRITING PROJECT SATURDAY SEMINAR

SUPPORTING STUDENT WRITERS

Join us for our first Saturday Seminar of the school year! Our new Invitational Institute fellows will share ideas and teaching strategies that engage young people, helping them to grow as writers and thinkers, problem solvers, advocates, and activists.

EVENT SCHEDULE:

8:30-9:00 - SIGN-IN REGISTRATION, WELCOME & REFRESHMENTS

9:00-10:30 - SESSION ONE WORKSHOPS:

SUSTAINING A BELOVED CLASSROOM COMMUNITY THROUGH WRITING

Rosella Mulone Perez, Brewster Central School District

Civil rights leader John Lewis wrote, “Democracy is not a state. It is an act, and each generation must do its part to help build what we called the Beloved Community, a nation and world society at peace with itself.” Together we will explore how the classroom can become a beloved community setting where students use writing to identify and solve authentic problems. (K-12)

USING SKETCHES TO SUPPORT LEARNING:

Observation & Writing in the Science Classroom

Laura Bryant, New Paltz Middle School

“The only difference between screwing around and science is writing it down” - Alex Jason, Mythbusters. In this workshop, we will create our own scientific sketches as a way of using art to support and strengthen our writing; then we'll explore students’ learning through our study of their scientific sketches. (Grades 3-12)

SOUNDING OUR “BARBARIC YAWPS”:

Writing Poetically to Explore Issues and Injustices in the World

Kelly Finn, Cornwall Central High School

Literary works, like Whitman's "Song of Myself, 52" offer opportunities for young writers to recognize the relationship between writing and critical civic empathy. We will explore how writers like Whitman use poetry to denounce social injustices in order to inspire students to do the same. (Grades 9-12)

10:30-12:00 - SESSION TWO WORKSHOPS:

TO BE A WRITER:

Identity & Identification

Rebecca Quackenbush, Chester Union Free School District

"Everyone is a writer." I tell my students this all of the time. But what happens when they actually begin to believe me? In this workshop, we will explore what happens when students internalize this idea and identify as writers. We'll study students' written reflections and engage in self-reflection as we discuss implications for future teaching and learning. (K-12)

STUDENT SELF-ASSESSMENT & REVISION:

Feedback that Students Care About

Taylor Perugini, Cornwall Central High School

Remember how it felt to get back a writing assignment with markups all over the page? Not understanding (or caring) what the marks meant? In this workshop, we will explore how to support students in revising their own writing, guiding them in recognizing areas of strength and areas in need of improvement. (Grades 3-12)

HEXAGONAL THINKING:

A Colorful Tool for Discussion & Connections

Meghann Chyla, Cornwall Central High School

Students, when given the chance, are expert puzzlers that can make and explain connections between different texts and ideas. To take advantage of this natural skill, we will try out and examine high school students’ use of hexagonal thinking to support creative discussion, critical thinking, and analytical writing. (K-College)
