Are you ready for peak hurricane season, other disasters?

Our staff handles emergencies everyday. But are you and your family prepared for a city-wide emergency or disaster that could knock out power and make it difficult to find food and water? Richmond is subject to the Atlantic Hurricane Season, which runs June 1 to Nov. 30. It is imperative that everyone is prepared in case of a hurricane or other disaster in Richmond.

Recruitment for the 41st Basic Dispatch Academy is open until Oct. 22. Pay rate has increased to $19.81 an hour. If you know of anyone interested in answering the call, please have them visit our employment webpage.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month


Breast cancer can affect men and women of all ages. Make sure to do self-checks monthly, schedule yearly mammograms and remind your friends and family. 

DEC's own cancer advocate, Deborah Jackson, will share information during special roll-call presentations in October.

Dress up for Halloween


All DEC staff are approved to dress in Halloween costumes on Oct. 28 and Oct. 31. Email your photos of staff members in costume to be displayed on the operations floor and possible use in social media posts.

DEC provided 911 and emergency information and giveaways, as well as solicited completed citizen surveys, at the Sept. 11 Memorial Stair Climb and Public Safety Fair; civic association meetings on Sept. 14, 15 and 28; East End Festival on Sept. 24; and the RPD Pop-Up Community event in Southwood on Sept. 29.
