October 2023 Newsletter

Greetings Prevention Champions, Welcome to the October edition of the Henrico Area Prevention Services monthly newsletter!

Prevention Month Observances are All Around Us!

🌟 October: A Dose of Prevention for National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month 🌟

As we embrace the colors of autumn, October also marks a crucial awareness month: National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month. This observance shines a spotlight on the often overlooked but profoundly important issue of prescription (Rx) drug and over-the-counter (OTC) cough medicine misuse.

Did you know that the impact of this misuse resonates across generations? One in 27 youth between the ages of 12 and 17 has misused cough medicine to get high from its dextromethorphan ingredient, while one in three young adults has misused a prescription drug. These statistics underscore the urgency of our mission.

Teen Medicine Misuse: Know the Facts

Join us in spreading the message of prevention, and visit Prevent MedAbuse a CADCA Initiative for valuable information and resources. Together, we can create a safer and healthier community for all. 🌿💊

This nationwide observance serves as a heartfelt reminder that the need for prevention has never been greater. Studies show that the earlier in life a young person starts using alcohol or other drugs, the greater their lifetime risk of misuse or addiction. During October, we celebrate all the possibilities that prevention brings! What is substance misuse prevention? Prevention aims to stop substance misuse before it starts. Together, we’re partners in prevention.

As we observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month, its important to recognize the prevalence of this issue and the harm it causes to individuals and families. Domestic violence can happen to anyone, regardless of age, gender, or socioeconomic status. This month, we must focus on prevention by educating ourselves and our communities on the warning signs and ways to intervene. By working together, we can create a safer and healthier future for all. Let's spread awareness and stand up against domestic violence.
