METRANS Convenes More Than 150 Maritime Professionals at 2023 IAME Conference

The METRANS Transportation Consortium hosted the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME) conference in Long Beach, California on September 5-8, 2023. IAME is an international association with over 300 individual members from every continent and more than 10 corporate members. The event garnered a large international audience with over 160 maritime professionals joining the conference. More than 130 papers covering a variety of topics including the cruise industry, container terminal optimization, and digitization were presented.

USC Students Tour the Port of Long Beach

During 2023 IAME Conference

A group of 14 USC students traveled to Long Beach on September 8, 2023 to attend the last day of the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME) conference and a harbor boat tour of the Port of Long Beach (POLB). Students toured POLB’s 25-mile waterfront and had the opportunity to examine the containers, cargo ships, and machinery used in the port’s day-to-day operations.

Center for International Trade & Transportation Plays Pivotal Role in Japanese-Californian Green Shipping Corridors Symposium

Japanese and U.S. companies and ports gathered in San Pedro on October 20 to share experiences, information, technical know-how, and best practices in forming Green Shipping Corridors and decarbonizing the port sector. Representatives from four Japanese ports and the California ports of Long Beach, Los Angeles, Oakland, and Hueneme were in attendance. The California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) and the Japan Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) served as the Symposium’s hosts. The Center for International Trade & Transportation (CITT) played an essential role by leading the design, development, implementation, and documentation of the half-day symposium.

The METRANS Transportation Consortium was established in 1998 as the first University Transportation Center in Southern California. METRANS is a joint partnership of the University of Southern California (USC) and California State University, Long Beach (CSULB).


METRANS' mission is to solve transportation problems of large metropolitan regions through interdisciplinary research, education and outreach. Its three primary objectives are: (1) fostering independent, high quality research to solve the nation's transportation problems; (2) training the next generation transportation workforce; and (3) disseminating information, best practices, and technology to the professional community.
