Happy Fall, Y’all! Parks and Recreation is hard at work from before sun up to after sun down providing a whole lot of recreation opportunities for the Town of Valdese. To kick things off, we’re incredibly excited about the opening of the new canoe/kayak launch and fishing pier at Valdese Lakeside Park. We had a great turn out at the ribbon cutting and are looking forward to seeing everyone use this amazing new amenity thanks to the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission. Please remember to have your license to fish, and use a personal flotation device when boating.
This is the Year of the Trail in Valdese and across North Carolina thanks in part to our own Representative Hugh Blackwell. To celebrate the Great Trails State Day on October 21, Friends of the Valdese Rec will host a 1,000 Mile Challenge Day. We want to encourage folks to come walk, hike, run, bike, or paddle that Saturday and help us meet that 1,000 mile challenge. Every mile counts! That same day, we will be partnering with Burke County Animal Services for the Swing for the Shelter Softball Tournament at Fletcher Fields.
We want to congratulate four members of the Valdese Torpedo Masters swim team who represented the Unifour for finishing 6th in the state at the North Carolina State Senior Games in Cary at the end of September. The swimmers were four points out of 5th place, and all of our participants brought home some bright hardware.
On the organized youth sports front, football and cheerleading are doing great as the season progresses, with two of the teams currently undefeated. Thanks to the Valdese Boosters for supporting our program and volunteering. For our upcoming sports, micro-basketball registration is open on valdese.recdesk.com, and basketball registration will open on Wednesday, October 4. We’re excited for the inaugural season in the Wayne Owens Gymnasium!
Once again, we are partnering with WSVM to present Rock ‘n’ Bowl on Saturday nights. From 6pm-10pm, we cut on the blacklights, fire up the grill, and turn up the tunes with Max Boom. We invite you to come on down and have a great time that won’t break the bank.
As the seasons change, we are saying goodbye to the Splash Pad for the year. The water will be shut off on Monday, October 2 until May, 2024. Bathrooms at Children’s Park will close at the end of October, and we will not be taking any picnic shelter reservations for dates the rest of 2023 after October 21.
We are offering some great party options in the Bubble and in the Bowling Alley Party Room this fall and winter. We have parties in the Bubble on Saturday afternoons during public swim hours, and three hour private parties are available in the Bubble on Sunday afternoons. We’re starting Saturday afternoon bowling parties that are all inclusive (food, shoes, bowling, and room rental). All you need to bring is the cake or cupcakes!
If you have any questions about programs or facilities, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Parks and Recreation staff at (828) 879-2132. We are grateful for all our patrons, and we look forward to seeing you at your Valdese Parks and Recreation Department.
