CRITICAL TIME FOR THE DRIVE SAFE BILLS
We are in a critical period in Lansing to get the Drive Safe Bills out of committee before year end. The necessary votes are still not there but many things are happening to make change legislators minds!

SNL held a meeting with Representative Nate Shannon at St. Blase church to make the case for the Drive Safe bills. Over 35 people attended!

Commentaries in support of the bills are being published in our state media. Click here to read an op-ed by Isaiah Wunsch, a former legislative staffer and a Grand Traverse county cherry and apple farmer in the October 10th Detroit Free Press.
An SNL team travelled to Lansing on October 4th to distribute an Op-Ed by former representative Dave Pagel to every single House and Senate legislator. An excerpt from the Op-Ed:

"It’s easy to take things for granted, like the ability to move freely in your community, the ease at which you can go to your local store for a gallon of milk, or the fresh Michigan produce on your dinner table. It’s time we think about the people that work hard to put that produce on our tables and the sacrifices they make every day. It’s time to restore driver’s licenses for all in Michigan." Click here to read the complete Op-Ed.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Consider writing a making a call to you local county sheriff or police chief. Ask for a letter of support for Drivers' Licenses for all.
Click here for our Resource Guide, including an FAQ from the Secretary of State and letters of support from Prosecutor Eli Savit and Washtenaw County Sheriff Jerry L. Clayton.
OUR PROPOSED TRIP TO LANSING ON OCTOBER 24TH IS BEING CANCELLED.
Lansing legislative leaders feel we have done a good job contacting individual legislators already. But stay alert! On short notice we may require members to meet in Lansing for hearings or other events.
CATHOLICS FROM ACROSS THE DIOCESE OF GAYLORD ORGANIZE WITH SNL
Saturday, November 11 at 10:30 AM, over 200 Catholics and their neighbors will hold an Assembly for Human Dignity at St. Francis parish in Traverse City with the new bishop of the Gaylord Diocese, Bishop Jeffrey Walsh, and a host of elected and civic officials.

Organizing leaders from a host of Catholic parishes will be asking their state senator and state representative to work in Lansing to bring additional mental health resources to Spanish speakers and people before, during and after prison incarceration. In addition assembly organizers plan to highlight the service work of high school youth as well as allies who are caring for the environment, much in line with the exhortations of Pope Francis in his 2015 encyclical Laudato Si.

Deacon Tom Bousamra, Ms. Gladys Muñoz, Angelica Ledesma, and Fr. Wayne Dziekan are some of the members of the core organizing team -- and they hope that delegations from other parts of the state will join the Assembly.
