NCC receives Southwest Pennsylvania Build Back Better subgrant

will add robotics skills training to M2K Pre-Apprenticeship Program

Carnegie Mellon University’s Block Center for Technology and Society was the recipient of a portion of $62.7M from the U.S. Department of Commerce through Southwest Pennsylvania Build Back Better subgrants.

The funds will support skills-focused training to help Southwestern Pennsylvanians secure robotics and advanced manufacturing jobs.

New Century Careers is among nine recipients chosen by the Block Center to receive a subgrant.

NCC will acquire a robotic training cell, develop curriculum and offer industry-recognized credentialing.

Working with Tooling U-SME, NCC will identify online modules and hands-on training to add to its tuition-free Manufacturing 2000 machinist curriculum. This will add enhanced skills to the M2K program addressing the demand of manufacturers for job-ready candidates.

"Exposure to robotics/automation training will enhance existing M2K trainee placement with traditional manufacturers, while also leading the pre-apprentices directly to newer technology companies and academic institutions known for their research, development, and manufacture

of robots and automation solutions used globally,” said Neil Ashbaugh, NCC president and CEO.

Tanika Harris completes PACE Executive Coaching Program

Congratulations to Tanika Harris, NCC’s office manager, who has recently completed the PACE Executive Coaching Program.

The program provides certified BIPOC Executive and Life Coaches to BIPOC nonprofit executive and next-generation leaders in the region to strengthen their leadership, organizational and personal growth. Candidates are chosen to work one-on-one with a personal coach the candidate selects, meeting weekly over six months.

Tanika rates her overall experience as beneficial both professionally and personally. “My coach helped me address stressful, recurring issues in a more positive way,” she explained. Tanika found exploring each person’s – including her own -- leadership style to be very valuable. “I tended to keep things bottled up,” she admitted. “During this experience, I developed strategies and plans to voice changes that helped me and others manage better.”

The result, she said, was a huge relief. “I felt more empowered and confident and saw positive change.” The principles also spilled over into her personal life as she applied them to time management at home. Tanika encourages anyone considering the program to do it. “I was reluctant at first but I now navigate in a more positive light. I see a change in myself. I’m a better person for it!” And, in turn, so is New Century Careers.

National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) is a nationwide celebration established by the U.S.

Department of Labor to showcase and promote high-quality, inclusive, in-demand career pathways through Registered Apprentices. It is being celebrated this year from Nov. 13-19. The 2023 theme, “Registered Apprenticeship: Superhighway to Good Jobs,” reflects the prominence of Registered Apprenticeship as a proven, industry-driven training model that expedites the pathway into good jobs and improves diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the workplace. It addresses pressing workforce shortages in advanced manufacturing and other high-priority sectors.

New Century Careers offers a Registered Machinist Apprenticeship program. Registered and approved by the PA State Apprenticeship Council, the four-year NCC group sponsor machinist apprenticeship program supports the needs of small to medium sized companies, providing administration of a registered apprenticeship program for their employees while also acting as the program’s registered sponsor. NCC has also created a curriculum for the Registered Robotics Technician Apprenticeship.

New Century Careers marked National Manufacturing Day with outreach activities

New Century Careers receives

MFG Day Proclamation from Pittsburgh City Council

National Manufacturing Day is organized nationwide by the Manufacturing Institute in October each year. Commonly known as MFG Day, it is manufacturing’s biggest annual opportunity to inspire the next generation, positively shift perceptions about the industry, and build the foundation for the manufacturing workforce of the future.

A Pittsburgh City Council Proclamation recognized major regional growth in innovative sectors like robotics and autonomy and advanced manufacturing. It was presented on Oct. 10 to NCC staff Neil Ashbaugh, Tanika Harris and John Alexander (left to right below). NCC thanks Councilman Bruce Kraus for sponsoring the proclamation.

NCC participates in ARM Institute MFG Day event on Oct. 5

NCC was among 30 partners who joined the ARM Institute's MFG Day event on Oct. 5. About 150 regional high school students, teachers, and administrators were welcomed at Mill 19 to explore careers in manufacturing through discussion pods, an exhibit hall of training providers, technology demonstrations, and tables from local manufacturers. At a new session for teachers, administrators, guidance counselors, and other influencers they learned about the many resources available to communicate the value of manufacturing careers. Above, John Alexander, NCC instructor, demonstrates a simulator.

Final M2K cohort of 2023 enrolling!

Enroll in tuition-free Manufacturing 2000 today to join the Pittsburgh cohort and start a new career in the new year! Or refer candidates! M2K registration also is ongoing at the Eastern Westmoreland CTC (EWCTC) site in Latrobe. View the online application for either site here or contact Christina Sparks at 412-258-6617. NCC staff visited McKeesport High School's Career Fair and open houses were held at NCC and EWCTC, extending MFG Day recruitment events throughout the month of October!

It's time to Give Big!

Give Big Pittsburgh is just around the corner! This 24-hour online fundraising effort offers nonprofits a single donor platform to raise funds to support their critical missions. You can impact manufacturing for years to come by donating to New Century Careers on Tuesday, Nov. 28 or in advance here.

WHY I GIVE: President and Founder of TAP Industrial Sales Tony Pruszenski, an NCC donor, says, “I felt that this would be a great way to ‘pay it forward’ for the next group of machinists -- those who did not know what they wanted or for those looking to get a fresh start in a new career. All the companies I visit are looking for new hires. So,

when I get a chance, I recommend New Century Careers to them. I believe in the work New Century Careers is doing to train the future machinists of Southwestern Pennsylvania and beyond.”
