Chicago's Lead Pipeline Replacement Program

In 1986, Chicago complied with the federal government's ban on lead pipes. Lead is dangerous; it can harm a child's brain and nervous system, cause learning and behavioral problems, as well as put pregnant women and women of child-bearing age at increased risk.

If you live in a house or two flat built before 1986, there's a high likelihood that your water service line has lead pipes from the water main in the street bringing water into your home - unless it was replaced during an earlier renovation or addition.

The City of Chicago launched a multi-year effort to remove all of Chicago's lead lines
