Focus On Workforce: How Your Department Can Adapt to Current and Future Trends


From equipment operators to directors, an engaged and well-trained workforce is the backbone to public works departments across the country. To support its membership, the American Public Works Association works hard to stay across current trends and future challenges in the workforce by engaging its members in groups like the Workforce Development Committee. To take a look at the challenges and trends they're seeing, we were joined by Donna Shea (Chair, APWA Workforce Development Committee), David Clark (Director of Public Works at Fulton County, GA) and Jerrel Kruschke (Commissioner of Public Works in Milwaukee, WI).

We often think of citizens as public works customers, but what if we thought of them as team members? Could applying the same principles and practices a good leader uses with their team improve public works awareness and transform citizen and department dynamics? You are probably already engaging with your community in ways that foster mutual respect, grow collaboration, and increase rapport but haven’t thought of it as an extension of your leadership.

Inspiring Leadership and Innovation: Pay It Forward Projects by TLP Cohorts 7 & 8


On September 19, 2024, members of Cohorts 7 and 8 of the CT Transportation Leadership Program gathered to present their Pay It Forward Projects in Storrs, CT. The event showcased fresh perspectives on leadership, innovation, and teamwork. Participants delivered creative solutions, ranging from maintenance ideas to new program initiatives, with energy and enthusiasm. Presenters for the day included Scott Yeomans, Steven Jamele, Ken Ash, Rick Arborio, Alex Klose, Ben North, Michael Ciacciarella, Anthony Giannelli, Norman Ortiz, and Peter DiCesare. 

On October 9, 2024, the excitement continued at the CTDOT Training Center in Newington, CT with another round of project presentations. The creativity in the room was palpable as Cohorts 7 and 8 members shared their impactful ideas. Presenters for this session included Ryan Powers, Toni Zanks, Bob Kropp, Jason Outlaw, Tyler Marchi, Pat Emmerson, Todd Deklyn, Justin Porter, Nick Szestakow, and Luis Lorenzo​.


Congratulations to all of the presenters for their outstanding work and dedication to innovation and leadership!
