AB Reminder: Directive 040 pressure requirements 

Directive 040 requires that annual pressure and testing surveys be completed by December 31, 2024 and submitted by March 31, 2025. 

Failure to obtain and submit the required pressures and, in some instances, fluid analysis, will result in a $1000 administrative penalty (fine) plus you will still have to obtain and submit the test data to fulfil the 2024 requirement. Contact us if you require assistance requesting a waiver.

AB Reminder: Packer Isolation Test

Directive 087: Well Integrity Management Section 2 requires that packer isolation test results be reported by December 31, 2024. 

AB: AER - Scheduled System Outage

Please be advised that the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) will perform essential updates to its production database, resulting in a temporary outage of all regulatory systems from 7 p.m., Thursday, November 14, to 8 a.m., Monday, November 18.

AB: Invitation for Feedback on Revisions to Directive 060

The AER is seeking feedback on updates to Directive 060: Upstream Petroleum Industry Flaring, Incinerating, and Venting.

Below are a few key updates: 

• A new section “Emissions Research and Innovation” (section 5) has been added. 


• Section 7, “Performance Requirements,” has been updated to allow signoff from a qualified person in lieu of AER approval in some instances.


• Revised requirements for alternative fugitive emissions management programs (Alt-FEMPs) and FEMPs.

 

• Added CSA Z620.3 performance requirements for flaring, incineration, and enclosed combustion.


Feedback will be accepted through Sunday, November 24, 2024.

AB: Invitation for Feedback on Revisions to Directive 071

The AER is seeking feedback on updates to Emergency Preparedness and Response.

AB: New Edition of Directive 020

On November 6, 2024, the AER released a new edition of Directive 020: Well Abandonment. The following was amended: 

• Retrievable plugs or packers may remain in place during non-level-A abandonments when zonal abandonment requirements are met (section 5.4.5.2).


• A “Layered Cement Plug Variance Submission” template is required when cement squeezing multiple intervals at the same time using layered cement plugs for remedial cementing (section 5.2.3).


• Licensees must review offset well operational activities (for wells with publicly available information) in the routinely approved subsurface geological strata within a 1.6 km radius of the subject well (section 5.6.2).


• Reorganized section 5 and grouped the requirements for routine commingled abandonment into a new section (section 5.6).


• Added content on commingling regions to section 5.6, including information on new qualified pools for commingled abandonment in central Alberta and a map of a new routine commingled abandonment region.
