Updated Guideline: PEP to Prevent HIV Infection

Updated by lead author Dr. Ethan Cowan, with the Medical Care Criteria Committee (MCCC), the October 2024 Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) to Prevent HIV Infection guideline provides New York State clinicians with effective care management strategies for individuals who report a potential exposure to HIV.


Updates to the guideline include:


  • New recommendations, discussion, and references added on bictegravir/tenofovir alafenamide/emtricitabine (BIC/TAF/FTC) as a preferred single-tablet PEP regimen for nonpregnant and pregnant adults
  • Discussion added on PEP-in-pocket, which involves giving individuals with an anticipated low frequency of high-risk HIV exposures a prescription for PEP

Lead author Dr. Hector I. Ojeda-Martinez, with the MCCC, has revised the September 2024 Prevention and Management of Hepatitis A Virus Infection in Adults With HIV guideline for New York State clinicians in ambulatory settings who provide primary and HIV specialty care for adults who have or are at risk of acquiring hepatitis A virus infection. Resources and references have been updated throughout the guideline.
