Upcycling T- Shirts
Thu, Oct 3 | 12:10-1pm
UHS Tang Education Center
Instructors: Kim Guess and Carla Jackson
Before you start cleaning out your closet, save some t-shirts to upcycle! Repurposing something you’d otherwise throw away is not only good for the environment, it also gives us a sense of self-sufficiency, which can boost your self esteem, self confidence, and provide a healthy sense of achievement. In this interactive workshop, you can follow along as we make a reusable shopping bag out of an old shirt, with no sewing required!

Recipe of the Month:
Southwest Lentil and Rice Skillet
This budget-friendly, easy, hearty recipe from Budget Bytes uses mostly pantry staples. It’s a vegetarian one pan meal that can be made fully plant-based if you’d like. Fun fact: the vitamin C in the tomatoes helps you absorb the plant-based iron in the beans and lentils. Recipe from Plant-Based and Planet-Friendly Spring 2024. Find these recipes and other fun plant-based recipes under “Plant-Based Meals” on the Recipes by Class page. For more recipes, visit Cook Well Berkeley!

Fall Immunizations and Hygiene
Respiratory viruses such as flu, RSV, and COVID tend to become more prevalent in the fall/winter. It is highly recommended to get your vaccines to protect yourself and others. Here are other actions you can take to reduce the spread of these contagious viruses:
- Improve air quality by opening windows to bring in fresh outside air, use air purifiers, or gather outdoors. Cleaner air can reduce the risk of exposure to viruses.
- Do not cough into your hands - this transfers germs to everything you touch. Instead, cover coughs and sneezes with your elbow or a tissue (then throw it away and wash your hands).
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Be aware of "high-touch" areas such as door knobs, handrails, and counters.
- Clean your hands and phone more often.
- Maintain your physical health and support your immunity by tending to your sleep, nutrition, and physical activity.
Contact your doctor or local provider today to schedule your immunizations and for those interested, check out the full CDC homepage for more information.
