ICYMI

( In Case You Missed It)

On September 12, 2024, Sarah Gillis, one of the Polaris Dawn astronauts, took part in a remarkable event during the mission. While aboard SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft, she performed Rey's Theme, a violin piece composed by John Williams for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This performance, titled Harmony of Resilience, was recorded in space and shared globally. Gillis floated in zero gravity as she played, while the video also featured orchestras from Earth.

The performance was created to symbolize unity and hope, as part of a collaboration with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the music education nonprofit El Sistema USA.The project aimed to inspire children to pursue both music and science, promoting resilience in the fight against childhood diseases. This special performance followed Gillis' historic spacewalk, making her one of the first commercial astronauts to engage in extravehicular activity (EVA) during the Polaris Dawn mission.

Her musical contribution was also a personal nod to her background in classical music, which she credits for shaping her career in engineering and space exploration.
