School is in full swing, and autumn is upon us in Cedar City. We want to send a special welcome to all SUU students who are calling Cedar City home once again or for the first time.
I was happy to join in the back-to-school festivities this year during SUU's Welcome Week when the University welcomed more than 2,500 new freshmen and broke ground on a new business building expansion.
Named after Cedar City's own, the 22,000 square-foot, two-story Joe and Beverly Burgess Family Business Center will be located on 600 W. University Blvd. It will be connected to SUU’s current business building through the Alan and Kathy Hamlin Skybridge. Construction has already begun
and will run through spring of 2026.
As I watched the banner unfurl at the groundbreaking, revealing the Burgess family name as three generations of their family looked on, I was again reminded of how happy I am to live in a community built around a commitment to education.
Just as this new project at SUU is the result of many dedicated SUU employees and generous donors, our city has been built on one good idea after another from all of you—neighbors, teachers, ancestors all working to bring opportunities for learning and growth to Iron County.
Although the regular routines are back in session, there is still so much to do in Festival City USA as the year winds down. From the Livestock Festival, to Halloween events, to the Downtown Lighting Ceremony, we still have much to anticipate.
Whether it's through construction projects, school projects or a little extracurricular fun, I hope this fall brings us all together in the name of community and development.
