Rare Solar Visit by ATLAS Comet Photographed by JCDO Director

The night sky has been quite entertaining and interesting in October with the Northern Lights and a comet's appearance. Jack C. Davis Observatory Director Dr. Thomas Herring captured photos of Comet A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS. Dr. Herring says the comet last passed by the Earth more than 80,000 years ago and has recently attained a weekly hyperbolic orbit.

To better understand the naming of the comet, Dr. Herring reports that Tsuchinshan is the Chinese observatory (also known as Purple Mountain) and along with ATLAS (Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System) co-discovered it in 2023.
