Fielding began writing the novel soon after he began his magistracy, and it took a markedly different approach to his comic works Joseph Andrews and Tom Jones. He declared in the dedication that this work was “sincerely designed to promote the Cause of Virtue, and to expose some of the most glaring Evils, as well public as private, which at present infest the Country.” It may be seen as the first novel of social protest and reform in English, though it is also the sentimental story of its long-suffering heroine’s marriage. Although there were two impressions of the edition a month apart, there are no recorded distinguishing characteristics between them. ESTC T89846. ROTHSCHILD 853. With final blank in vol.1 and with the 'Universal-Register Office' leaf at end of vol. 2 (often lacking). Love in Several Masques was quite the triumph for the 20-year-old Fielding. It opened on February 16, 1728, in Drury Lane, with Colley Cibber and Mrs. Oldfield in the cast, and its competition was Gay's Beggars Opera and Vanburghs The Provokd Husband. Very light toning throughout with reasonable text margins, uncommon in most rebindings of the period. Bookplate of Louis C. Asher, creator of the first Sears, Roebuck catalogue, father-in-law of Stanley Kunitz, and armorial bookplate of Viscount Birkenhead. Marbled endpapers, inner dentelles, gilt cover panels. "The first volume contains a preface. largely autobiographical, followed by some poems.....early compositions of the heart rather than the head.........The second volume contains more interesting matter: the long Lucianic fragment, "A Journey from this World to the Next." which begins with some of Fielding's happiest satire in the coach-driver of the spirits from earth......In the third volume, he printed the most brilliant piece of work that he had yet achieved, "The Life of Mr. Jonathan Wild the Great." Colish, New York on paper made in the author's mill at Lime Rock Connecticut. The water-mark portrait shows him half-way before life began. The cover paper made by Veronica Ruzicka. In this biography, Hunter, six foot tall at the age of 14 enlisted, and accepted into the cavalry during the Spanish American War only to have his father drag him back home. Also, a good deal of material on his days spent working at the Roycrofters with Elbert Hubbard. Bright, sharp copy, bookplate. Orig. vellum spine and marbled boards. Limited edition signed by Dard Hunter, copy 8 of 210, 200 of which were for sale; however, as noted in his own bibliography there were only 180 completed. "The last work of the Mountain House Press and the author's magnum opus, this book provides a history of American papermaking by listing and describing the first paper mill in each state from 1690 until 1811 ... There are in the book 123 facsimiles of documents and watermarks and forty-two reproductions of labels used by these early paper manufacturers. The book is printed on Dard Hunter's paper." This last, most ambitious work, with more illustrations and samples than any of the earlier works: the bold, and elegant type was designed by Hunter's son, Dard Jr. As usual, all type-setting and presswork for the book was done by father and son. A bright fresh copy with an elaborately watermarked sheet of Dard Hunter's paper laid-in. Front cover soiling to clamshell case. Unbound in original sheets. This 11th century epic poem (chanson de geste) based on Roland and the battle of Roncevaux Pass is the oldest surviving major work of French literature. Known as one of Rogers' favorite books, a superb example of his elusive style, printed in two columns, illustrated with seven stained glass window designs colored by hand. The type fonts are a lettre batarde and Civilite types imported from France, the title page printed in red and black with panel design of thistles against a blue background.
