Message from Dean Egerstedt

One major source of pride in the UCI Samueli School of Engineering is how our faculty are winning prestigious awards at an accelerating pace. I like to particularly focus on the awards won by our junior faculty, as they are literally the future of the school. In terms of federal early career awards, we are doing very well and during the past four years, 18 junior faculty, representing all six departments in the school, received Early Career Awards from the National Science Foundation. At the other end of the career spectrum, our senior faculty are equally impressive. As a prime example of this, the American Geophysical Union (AGU) recently awarded the William Bowie Medal to Distinguished Professor Soroosh Sorooshian for “exceptional contributions to water science and practice, and vision in developing a global precipitation product serving millions of people around the world.” This recognition is AGU’s highest honor, given to one of its over 60,000 members in recognition of outstanding contributions to fundamental Earth and space science and for unselfish cooperation in research.

Best,

Magnus Egerstedt, Ph.D.
