~ October 2025 ~

Greetings!

Message from the Co-President . . . . .

Greetings CVOA members

September on the Coast of Maine can be spectacular, and the weather gods smiled down on the 50 plus CVOA members who joined our meet-up in Stonington. It was a destination event where our group would gather for two suppers, but you were on your own for the rest of the time. Golf, sailing shopping, kayaking, strolling, exploring and catching up with Valley friends held your interest. It was CVOA at its best with a minimal schedule at a great location, with hospitality from locals who are our members. Thank-you Mike and Jeanette.

Have you ever had one of these experiences? Patti and I went to Nantucket for a few days for celebrate our anniversary. Being after Labor Day, the Island was busy but not crowded. We rode out to one of the beaches, enjoyed the sun and sand, and as we were putting our shoes back on, Patti overheard a conversation among a trio of bikers that mentioned Sugarloaf. As we spoke with these folks, we learned that, yes, they were Sugarloafers and CVOA members as well. Then we all spotted the familiar blue and white triangle sticker on one of posts. It had been there for a while. You just never know how or when the connection will be made.

We all have our own pivot point where one season blends into the next. This year, Stonington was my mark that headed off to fall and winter. Some might say that what is to come is bleak. I say “Humbug”! It’s cold and white with the best holidays. It’s the first snow, the first chair and the first run. So, tune your outlook, dump the mice out of your boots and come to Sugarloaf Homecoming on the weekend October 10-12. If summer still has you in its grip, drop by the CVOA membership table in the Base Lodge by Guest Service. I think we’ll have the cure, you can renew your membership and meet our new vice president, Tom Augat.

STONINGTON OUTING

On September 9-11, 60 members of the Carrabassett Valley Outdoor Association (CVOA) arrived in Stonington (many for the very first time) via cars, trucks, campers, power and sail boats. Members stayed at the hotels, Pilgrim’s Inn, Greenlaw’s Campground, VRBO’s and with summer Stonington friends. Perfect weather prevailed as members went boating, kayaking, sailing, hiking, played golf and tennis; they shopped, dined, visited the Quarry, Isle Au Haut and Nervous Nellies, all the while experiencing the best of Stonington and beyond. Thank you to the Deer Isle Music Hall and BBQ for hosting a private event on Tuesday. After a day filled with outdoor activities, a backyard cookout was held at the home of Michael and Jeannette Parker, organizers of the event and members of the club…

We just returned from the VBT/CVOA Bike trip to the Alsace and Black Forest Region of France, Switzerland, and Germany. 12 CVOA members signed up, but 2 had to drop out. We had a group of 20 riders and we all made new friends! The weather was challenging but in true CVOA style, everyone peddled on. The trip had 20 people total and we made new friends quickly. We started the tour in Basel, Switzerland, then peddled a total of 171 miles to end up in Obernai, France. Finally ending the tour with a short train ride into Strasbourg, France. The weather was challenging but in true CVOA style, everyone peddled on. Some folks rode e-bikes, while others used road bikes, either way we were all tired by the end of the day and ready for dinner! Despite the less than perfect weather, folks told me they'd definitely do another VBT trip! Dolomites, anyone?

Range News

Say Hello to Fall with a Bang!

The Range held our 2nd Annual Davis Doubles Shoot! Scott Nichols was the big winner with a top score of 42 out of 50. Ray Stone came in second with 38 and Bob Nichols 36. Also prizes awarded for shooting special green clays. The Range stayed dry while the rest of the State was in rain which likely contributed to a lower turnout. But everyone had fun. Thank you to Pat Durham and Ed Davis for scoring. Jamison Nichols for pulling and loading clays. And Rosaria Chantrill for baking treats.

CVOA Homecoming BBQ on October 12th from 11am to 2pm. No Trap that morning, but during the BBQ, the Range will host a supervised target shoot on the Pistol Range. Come try our metal or paper targets with the small caliber 22 cricket rifles. Appropriate for children 10 yrs old and up. (Adults too!) The range will be closed for all other shooting activities during the BBQ. The Range will open again for normal shooting activities after 2pm.

If you can help with BBQ set up/clean up, or supervised shooting please contact Diane Stone at dpstone32@gmail.com or text me at 207-240-4752.

We host 5 Stand Shoots every Saturday and Trap Shoots every Sunday starting at 9am until noon (or when all shooters are done, so come early) These shoots are open to the public, so bring your friends! This is not a competition and beginners are welcome. It's a great way to learn or practice these shooting sports. The cost is $6/round.

Also, check out our targets on the Pistol and Rifle Ranges. We have new metal and paper target options. Remember, if the Pistol Range is busy and one of the Rifle Ranges is empty, it is permissible to walk up to the targets and shoot handgun on the Rifle Ranges.

Remember, No Shotgun use on the Pistol Range. You may pattern your shotgun on the 50 yard range, or set up cardboard against the 5 stand field berm.

______________________________________________________________

As a range member, your guests are welcome. Shooting guests should sign the green Day Use waiver form and pay $10/day. Non shooting guests need not sign in, but it is the responsibility of the member to ensure all posted rules are followed. Any questions, please contact me.

I hope to see our Range Members enjoying our other CVOA events. Come meet old friends and make new ones. CVOA folks know how to have fun any time of year.

Enjoy our beautiful Range and be safe!
