Greenway Honors William Barnabas McHenry with Renamed Grant Program

The Hudson River Valley Greenway has officially renamed its Community and Compact Grant Program in honor of founding Chairman William Barnabas “Barney” McHenry. Adopted on October 8, 2025, the proclamation recognizes McHenry’s decades of visionary leadership, generosity, and dedication to uniting partners across the region to preserve the Hudson Valley’s natural, historic, and cultural resources.

Going forward, the program will be known as the William Barnabas McHenry Community and Compact Grant Program, celebrating his enduring legacy and commitment to supporting communities throughout the Hudson River Valley.

Hudson River Valley Greenway Announces $401,700 in Grants

At its October Board Meeting, the Hudson River Valley Greenway approved eight matching Conservancy Trail awards totaling $401,700.

The funded Conservancy Trail Grants include:

• $189,000 to the Town of Montgomery for the Kimball Park Rail Trail
• $75,000 to the Town of Moreau for the Nolan Road Riverside Trail Phase II Planning
• $43,775 to the Village of Schuylerville for the Design & Planning for the Waterfront Memorial Trail & Woodland Connector Trail
• $27,500 to the Town of Poughkeepsie for the Sunnyside Park Improvement & Woodland Path
• $25,000 to the Rogers Island Heritage Development Alliance, Inc. for the Champlain Canal Interpretive Trail Planning Project
• $20,000 to the Town of Woodstock for the WooHu Trail
• $19,425 to the Hudson Valley Rail Trail Association for the Ford Bridge Nature Trail
• $2,000 to the American Battlefield Trust for 2025 Signage

The next round of Conservancy Trail Grant applications are TBA, and Community Planning grant applications are due October 31, 2025, through HRVG's Online Grants Platform. Information and guidelines are available on our website.

Hastings-on-Hudson Completes Comprehensive Plan with Greenway Support

The Village of Hastings-on-Hudson recently completed its Comprehensive Plan and Local Waterfront Revitalization Program with help from a Greenway Compact Grant from the Hudson River Valley Greenway. The plan was developed through extensive community engagement and advances the goals of Westchester County’s Greenway Compact Plan—promoting smart growth, environmental stewardship, and vibrant, connected communities.

The Greenway is proud to have supported this effort, which demonstrates how thoughtful, community-driven planning can put Greenway principles into action across the region. Communities interested in similar projects are encouraged to explore Greenway grant opportunities to bring their own visions to life. LEARN MORE >>.

Empire State Trail Economic Impact Study

Parks & Trails New York (PTNY), with support from the Hudson River Valley Greenway and other partners, is leading an Economic Impact Study of the Empire State Trail to measure its impact on local economies, health, and quality of life.

You can help! PTNY is seeking volunteers to greet trail users and encourage them to complete a short intercept survey. Training and materials are provided. Please sign up here.

Trail users can also contribute by completing the online survey. Communities and partners are encouraged to share the survey through flyers or social media.

Your participation will help strengthen and sustain the Empire State Trail for years to come.
