President's Message

As I am partial to marine metaphors, the ALL ship is underway and under full sail.

Membership is up from last fall by 8%. Both classrooms are humming almost every day. In addition to on-campus classes, there are six hybrid and 16 Zoom-only classes involving more members from home.

Last month, we returned to an in-person version of the new member orientation, with board members sitting at tables with new members. We got to know one another and answered questions about all aspects of the program. The information was also emailed to all new members, and is available on our website for those that couldn’t attend, and to our all-important and growing number of Zoom-only class participants.

At the event, the chairs of committees made a pitch for members to join them in the efforts that support ALL: membership, curriculum, communications, social, special events, and finance/development. If you have any background in these areas, and have a little spare time, we would love to hear from you. Just drop us an email, and we will take it from there.

Meanwhile, on campus there are new initiatives being explored with the Cape Cod Community College, such as mutual outreach, student interns at ALL, and the involvement of ALL members as guest presenters in CCCC classes! This is an exciting development for both institutions, as partners in community education.

Enjoy your classes, and thanks for being in our community.

Roger Shoemaker

Submissions open for

Reflections 2026

Reflections 2026 submissions now open

The deadline for submissions is December 17, 2025

Every year, the Academy for Lifelong Learning publishes a compilation of writings and art of its members in an anthology titled Reflections. This annual publication showcases individual pieces of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, photography, and art reflecting memories, insights, humor, and philosophy gathered from the lifelong experiences of its authors.

Each of us is accomplished. We have distinguished ourselves in the worlds of business, academia, arts and science, the military and so many other fields over a lifetime. As you read this, know you too have something to share that peers and the community would benefit from reading and viewing.

Within you is a story or poem worth writing. Maybe there is a photograph or a piece of art you would like to share. Whether you have a creative aptitude, (e.g. writing, watercolor, etc.) or you have a predilection for the political, philosophical, or community, etc., your voice is important. We each have something to say, and Reflections is your place to do just that.

Take a chance on yourself. You have something to share, and we are here to see that happen.

Submission guidelines and a contact email can be found on the Reflections 2026 webpage.

We look forward to working with you!

The Reflections 2026 Team

Thank you, Lew Taylor!

Lew Taylor has been an active supporter of ALL for many years. He is a former ALL Board member and longtime ALL coordinator.

Lew is a retired public librarian and has both a BA and an MA in American History.

When Lew Taylor recently closed his "I Cannot Live Without Books" store in West Dennis, he immediately thought of ALL and generously donated over 50 books to the ALL library.

If you see Lew on campus this fall, you might want to stop and chat with him about history and music. He is currently teaching two ALL 12-week courses, The Magical Musical Tour: The Story of The Beatles and Elvis Presley: The Man and His Music.

Thank you for your generosity, Lew!

The Revolution on Cape Cod and the Islands

An ALL Special Event

A Presentation by Historian David Martin

Friday, October 17th 10:30 a.m. - 12 noon on Zoom

Please join historian David Martin on Friday, October 17th at 10:30 to discuss "The Revolution on Cape Cod and the Islands." This new illustrated book, prepared in time for the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, brings together under one cover the facts and narratives about the often little-known histories of the Revolution on Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, from the period 1761 (end of the French and Indian Wars) to 1783 (Treaty of Paris).

It was co-written by 24 authors coordinated through the Cape and Islands Historians Committee. Published by West Barnstable Press, the publication is being followed by a series of presentations and is available in libraries and schools. Personal copies are available by contacting David Martin at davidmartindr@aol.com.

Interested ALL members, please email

lifelonglearning@capecod.edu to reserve your space.

Zoom links for this event will be emailed on October 16th.

Sarah Canning "Cut The Cord" presentation

September 29, 2025

Sarah Canning founded her company "Gadgets Made Eazy" in 2018 after graduating from CCCC with two degrees in technology. Her presentation outlined ways to reduce your cable and internet bill.

Her business offers technology tutoring for virtually any gadget you own, from computers to smart doorbells, to Alexa-type devices.

There were 62 registrants for the "Cut the Cord" presentation, with approximately 40 people attending in person. Sarah Canning gave us reasons to cut the cord and things needed to be able to do so. For those who don't want to entirely break up with Comcast, she gave us ways to lower our monthly bill.

We learned about streaming services and streaming devices, and which ones provide live TV, on demand, and 24-hour channels. The wealth of information and options was overwhelming. Gadgets Made Eazy is ready to hold your hand if you do decide to cut the cord.

ALL members visit

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute

September 25, 2025

On September 25th, 17 ALL members visited the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI).

Victoria Smith and Jim Flynn facilitated a half-day of workshops providing a taste of the extraordinary work done by their staff of experts.

WHOI is the second largest employer on Cape Cod. It contributes research that is recognized internationally and has global impact. At any given time, there are 800 concurrent research projects happening there in every topic that touches the ocean (on this planet or in the solar system).

Our group visited with Chris Ross, Director of the Mooring Lab and Jennie Rheuban from Sea Grant. We also participated in several interactive learning exercises. It left most of us hungry for more information. We were surprised to find that while much of their budget comes from grants, 20 percent comes from membership.

ALL is hoping to be able to schedule additional opportunities for ALL members to visit WHOI in the spring of 2026. So watch your email.

If you would like additional information on what is going on at WHOI before then, you can explore the following links and resources.

ALL new member orientation

September 3, 2025

The information discussed was also emailed to all new members, and is available on the ALL website for those that couldn’t attend, Several pictures from that event follow.

Membership Committee visit to

Recently, Paul Arnold and Alice Mitchell of our Membership Committee, did a presentation about ALL to members of the Barnstable Newcomers.

Paul and Alice shared the history of ALL and discussed the variety of classes offered this semester. They also distributed the ALL flyer, went through the registration process and invited the members to consider becoming coordinators at ALL.

The presentation was very well received by the over 40 members of the club in attendance!
