As a grandparent, it is such a joy being with my grandchildren when they discover something new. Their eyes grow wide and for a moment, their world stops. They exist in a state of pure surprise.
As they grow, these experiences accumulate—building a sense of context. Soon, their favorite word is “again.” They come to love repetition and the comfort of knowing what comes next. This progression is a necessary path toward adulthood, but a beautiful mystery can get lost along the way. We begin to seek out mystery only when it's still under our control—in books and movies, but rarely in life.
Zen teaches us to return to that place of unknowing. To drop our need for context, and let our minds come to a complete stop. From that place, we can see more clearly and respond with a spontaneous, creative heart.
Yours in the mystery,
Bob Kutter, Dharma Teacher
