President's Message

Dear Friends,

Fall is here! A season of energy and opportunity for all of us in fundraising as we enter year-end campaigns and prepare for the busy holiday season. It’s also a season to pause, reflect, and recommit to doing our work with integrity and purpose.

That’s why I’m so excited for our October 6 chapter program, “Ethical Fundraising in a Changing World: Centering Equity, Accountability, and Community Voice,” presented by Maiya Winston of Be A Possibility. Maiya brings extensive expertise in DEI leadership and culture change, and she will challenge us to think deeply about what it means to center ethics in fundraising today. From balancing donor influence with mission alignment to embedding transparency and cultural responsiveness into our work, this session will offer practical tools for leading with both impact and justice. I encourage you to join us, as you’ll walk away with insights to strengthen not only your fundraising strategies, but also the communities we serve.

October is also an important month for our chapter leadership. Inside this newsletter, you’ll find the slate of nominees for our 2026 Board of Directors. Please take a few moments to review the slate as we continue to build a strong, inclusive leadership team to guide our chapter into the future. We will hold a membership vote to approve the slate at our October meeting.

I look forward to seeing you in a few weeks as we learn, connect, and advance our profession together.

Hillary Bessinger, CFRE

Program Topic:

Ethical Fundraising in a Changing

World: Centering Equity,

Accountability, and Community

Voice

In today’s rapidly shifting philanthropic landscape, fundraising professionals face a critical challenge — and opportunity — to reimagine their practices through the lens of ethics, equity, and inclusion. As donor demographics shift, social movements reshape expectations, and communities demand greater transparency, traditional fundraising methods are no longer enough.

This interactive session invites participants to explore what ethical fundraising truly means in a world shaped by systemic inequities, cultural complexity, and shifting power dynamics. Through collaborative exercises, guided reflection, and a co-created toolkit, attendees will examine how fundraising can either reinforce or disrupt exclusion — and how to lead with integrity, authenticity, and impact.

Participants will leave with:

  • A deeper understanding of how DEI principles inform ethical decision-making in donor engagement
  • Tools to identify and address bias in fundraising strategy, storytelling, and stewardship
  • Strategies for balancing donor influence with mission alignment and community accountability
  • A framework for embedding transparency, reciprocity, and cultural responsiveness into fundraising culture

Whether you're cultivating major gifts, designing campaigns, or stewarding donor relationships, this session will challenge assumptions and equip you to lead fundraising efforts that are not only effective — but just.

I began my journey through the AFPFW Metro Chapter archived records in January 2025 and have touched thousands of pieces of paper stored in tubs and boxes at our Association office in Dallas. I am thrilled to report my Phase I sorting process will be completed in October. I feel honored and privileged to review and analyze the story of 45 years of this Chapter. It is good to learn from those who have gone before us. I am filled with wonder and pride at the accomplishments of this Chapter. On to Phase II sorting!
