Tompkins Build Visits Bricklayers, Plumbers & Steamfitters


The Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (BAC) Local 3 hosted the Tompkins Build - Pathways to Apprenticeship class at their Whitney Point training center on October 9th. Students had the opportunity to try bricklaying, tile cutting, caulking, restoration, and cement pouring and finishing. They finished the evening connecting with union members and asking questions about opportunities in the trade.


Then, on October 23rd, the Plumbers & Steamfitters (UA) Local 81 hosted the class at their Ithaca training center. Students worked with 2nd-year apprentices to frame cornhole boards by measuring, cutting, and sweating the copper pipes before finishing them with plywood.


The Tompkins Build class will visit another seven union training centers during the 11-week program. The students are always energized after practicing what they’ve learned alongside professionals who will soon be their peers.

Congressman Josh Riley (NY-19) Joins Tompkins Build for Blueprint Reading


On October 21st, Congressman Josh Riley visited the Tompkins Build classroom to see the pre-apprenticeship program in action. The students were learning how to read blueprints as part of the Multi-Craft Core Curriculum. Congressman Riley joined right in on a square footage scavenger hunt!

IAED Attends NYATEP’s Workforce Development Conference in Albany

 

IAED’s Workforce Development Manager, Mira Kuroyedov, attended the New York Association of Training and Employment Professionals (NYATEP) annual Workforce Development Conference in Albany. Kuroyedov joined more than 350 professionals from the field at plenary sessions, panels, and workshops exploring trends and opportunities for New York’s workforce. IAED is a long-standing member organization of NYATEP.

Tompkins Chamber Announces Rob Montana as VP


The Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce recently introduced Rob Montana as its next Vice President. Rob replaces Peggy Coleman, who was promoted to President in March 2025, and brings 25 years of community-focused experience in stakeholder engagement and organizational leadership.
