October 2025

From the Executive Director

Dear Independence Alliance Supporters,

I am pleased to dedicate my message this month to sharing some great news with our community. Independence Alliance was recently awarded Empowerment through Vision funds from Greater Cincinnati Foundation.

These funds will have a meaningful impact on vision health and accessibility by advancing the prevention of blindness, enhancing the quality of life for individuals who are blind or visually impaired, and promoting improvements or research related to human sight.

We are launching this project by supporting individuals who are visually impaired with assistive items such as mobility and navigation aids, computer access, reading aids, and daily living aids. If you or someone you know is interested in submitting a referral for review, please see the guidelines and referral form attached. We are eager to effectively and practically create solutions through this funding to continue to assist people who are visually impaired in our service area.

We welcome your suggestions on other innovative and effective ways we can have a meaningful impact through this funding. Please feel free to contact me by email or by phone at 513-338-5100.

I am excited about this project and look forward to the new opportunities it will bring to our consumers. Thank you all for your continued support of our organization.

My best regards,

Rob

Trivia Question: This man won the Nobel prize for Literature and also composed some of his greatest works through dictation after he had become visually impaired. The fifth person to email me with the correct answer will win a $10 Amazon gift card.

Mission Moment: Increasing Independence

Several Independence Alliance consumers recently participated in a fun, 90-minute, chef-led Cooking Improv class at La Soupe, a nonprofit organization that rescues surplus and wasted food to create nutritious meals for those experiencing food insecurity. To increase their independence, consumers learned essential cooking techniques and together created balanced, nutritious meals, reduced food waste, and created a delicious, no-recipe dish using rescued produce. Inclusive, hands-on, our consumers gained confidence in the kitchen and put new skills to the test in creating a tasty dish of Vinaigrette Slaw and a Veggie & Egg Nest.
