Getting Out in the Community in September

On September 11th, the Oceanside community gathered at Fire Station 1 for the annual Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony, paying tribute to the victims and heroes of the September 11th attacks. The event featured a poignant Presentation of Colors, a Moment of Silence, Taps, and heartfelt remarks from the Fire Chief and Police Chief. The ceremony also included a display of local first responders' committed to their service, reinforcing the strength of our town. Attendees left inspired, carrying forward the spirit of unity and resilience that defines Patriot Day. Thank you to the Oceanside Fire Department for organizing this meaningful observance.

Cuisine for Kids brought together 125 to 150 donors, community members, and local leaders for a memorable evening of tastings from top local food vendors, craft beer from Green Cheek Beer Co., and award-winning wines from Burtech Vineyards. The event featured live music and a standout Lunch Box food truck, where teens from the Boys & Girls Club culinary training program served fresh, flavorful dishes they’d helped create. The night highlighted the community’s spirit and the youth’s impressive culinary skills, leaving a lasting impression of unity and support.

I tuned in to the Cal Cities San Diego County Division Virtual Meeting in September where elected officials and city staff from 18 San Diego County cities, including Oceanside. The agenda included updates from city managers and members, the 2025–2026 Division elections, planning for the Academy for Local Elected Officials, and a legislative report on bills at the close of session.

The 7th Annual Save Our Streets Pickleball Tournament at Melba Bishop Park & Recreation Center united the Oceanside community in a day of friendly competition and heartfelt remembrance for 9/11 victims, first responders, veterans, and families who protect, serve, and sacrifice. Official play kicked off at 10 a.m. with pickleball matches for all ages and skill levels, including fun games, activities, sports, and raffles. Highlights included youth cupstacking demos, lessons, and competitions featuring world-class champion Andrew Dale (1st Place – Jr. Beach Bandushall, July 2025), alongside a color guard presentation by North San Diego Young Marines. I had the great honor of providing welcoming comments. The event fostered a strong sense of community spirit, blending athletic energy with tributes to those who serve, all free and open to all.

The Oceanside Utilities Commission met to address vital water and sewer issues, starting with the introduction of new commissioner Dan Cotter and alternates Nathan Lacy and Sheila Reilly. Key discussions featured a presentation on amending Chapter 37, Article IX of the city ordinance to comply with the State Water Resources Control Board's updated Cross-Connection Control Policy Handbook, alongside recommendations for a $1,010,800 contract award to HPS Mechanical, Inc. for La Salina Wastewater Treatment Plant repairs and amendments to professional services agreements with Dudek and Recon Environmental for on-call support. Informational updates included San Diego County Water Authority summaries, repairs to the Mesa Loma water main, sewer reports for July and August, and upcoming Green Oceanside events through November.

The Oceanside Theatre Company hosted the Garden Party Gala, delighting attendees with an afternoon of refreshments, live entertainment, and a tribute to significant arts contributors through awards, a live auction and silent auction. The event showcased the talents of local artists and featured engaging activities, including a special focus on community support for OTC’s mission as a North County arts beacon. The festive atmosphere highlighted the power of collective celebration, leaving a lasting impact on all who attended.

The Veterans Association of North County (VANC) hosted its Annual Golf Tournament at Camp Pendleton Marine Memorial Golf Course, raising critical funds for the VEFA program, which provides emergency financial aid to active duty personnel and veterans in need. This event stands out as a powerful tribute to those who have served, bringing the community together to support a cause that ensures veterans and their families receive immediate assistance during tough times. The tournament fostered a day of unity, gratitude, and hope, making it a truly inspiring celebration of service and resilience.

the North County Transit District (NCTD) marked its 50th anniversary with a vibrant celebration at the Oceanside Transit Center, welcoming the public to honor decades of transportation service. The event featured a press conference highlighting NCTD’s legacy, with all transit modes on display, historical insights, and giveaways, fostering community pride and appreciation. The occasion also recognized the dedication of past and present Board Members, making it a meaningful tribute to the region’s connectivity and growth.
