Get Ready for Oct. 18 No Kings 2.0
On Saturday, October 18, 2025, the League of Women Voters will be an official national partner for the No Kings 2 peaceful day of mobilization to stand in solidarity with partners and stand up against hate and authoritarianism. The League has consistently and boldly spoken up in the face of rising authoritarianism. This is an opportunity to put words into action and show up in defense of democracy and as an effective ally.
League members are encouraged to participate locally in actions with partners on the ground in a non-partisan manner. We understand that we cannot control how other partners show up, and participating in any event comes with some risk. Please review our protest safety guidance.
If representing the League or wearing LWV shirts (which we encourage), please use good judgment when creating signs which should be in keeping with our non-partisan policy. In other words, do not carry signs mentioning any elected officials by name, or criticizing a specific political party by name.
Since the No Kings 2.0 is a national day of peaceful protest, several groups in our county and region are holding events. The events are listed on the Mobilize No Kings Site www.mobilize.us/nokings. Click on the link for the list, scroll down the event listing to find one near you and click on an event for details and then sign up for the event you wish to attend or just go to it. (NOTE: By signing up you agree to Mobilize's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. Mobilize is a service provider and will share your information with the event organizer, who may contact you.)

LWVPA Holds Press Conference to Denounce False Ads against Supreme Court Justices
The Pennsylvania League of Women Voters held a statewide press conference Oct. 9 to counter "false and misleading" mailers being sent to Republican and independent voters alleging the three justices running for retension on the state Supreme Court took it upon themselves to create a gerrymandered congressional district map in favor of Democrats in 2017. The mailer campaign is financed primarily by billionaire Jeffrey Yass.
As Executive Director Amy Widestrom and LWVPA President Susan Gobreski explained to members of the press, who were at the online conference, the situation was exactly the opposite.
“These materials are false and deliberately misstate both the facts of the 2018 League case and the Court’s constitutional role. When lawmakers refused to fix their unconstitutional map, the Court appointed an independent expert to draw fairer districts that reflected the will of the voters. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court didn’t gerrymander a map — it ended one. It didn’t act political; it acted constitutionally.”
The Pennsylvaia Supreme Court heard the case brought by the League of Women Voters objecting to the PA Legislature's badly gerrymandered 2011 map that resulted in a 13-5 Republican majority in the state congressional delegation when the statewide voter registration was majority Democrat and voters had voted for the Democratic candidate for president in 2016.
Delaware County voters may remember that the Republican gerrymandered 7th Congressional district resembled "Goofy kicking Donald" and was one of the most badly gerrymandered congressional districts in the country.

Vote to Retain the Justices Who Protected Our Rights
The three Supreme Court justices up for retention voted to reapportion the congressional districts throughout the state in 2018 to even the playing field for Republican and Democratic candidates when the state Legislature refused, protected mail-in voting and protected reproductive rights and workers' rights, all issues the League of Women Voters cares about.
Learn about the justices and judges running for retention.

Because one party or the other typically refuses to cooperate with the League to participate in candidate forums, LWVCDC decided to interview the candidates for Delaware County Council and the Court of Common Pleas separately this year, asking each candidate the same questions. Alas, the candidates of only one party, the Democratic Party, participated in the interviews.
The League staunchly adheres to its nonpartisan priniciples, but it refuses to be silenced altogether by the refusal of one party to participate in our efforts to educate voters. Here are the interviews LWVCDC was able to record with County Council candidates Richard Womack and Joanne Phillips and Common Pleas candidates Jack Stollsteimer and Mike Power, all Democrats.
Many thanks for their hard work to Johanna Nealon and Marita Green, co-chairs of our Voter Services Committee, and Jamie Mogil, president of the Lower Merion and Narberth League, who served as moderator.

LWVUS: The League Leads Suit to Stop Government from Using Sensitive Personal Information Targeting Citizens
LWVUS is the leading plaintiff, along with two state Leagues - Virginia and Louisiana - and the Electronic Privacy Information Center, in a landmark class action suit filed Sept. 30 against the federal government seeking to stop it from illegally consolidating and using sensitive personal information across federal agencies.
The suit, filed in the District of Columbia District Court, alleges that the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the Department of Homeland Security, the Social Security Administration and other departments, have secretly merged our personal information into one "emergency database" in violation of the Privacy Act of 1974 and the U.S. Constitution.
This centralized national citizenship and immigration database is now being used to mine for undocumented aliens, purge voter rolls and open criminal investigations. The suit alleges the database is composed of Social Security accounts, tax records, voter information from compliant states, and Health and Human Services data, including medical records, biometric data and children's case files.
If the court certifies a class, it would comprise all U.S. citizens and legal residents, more than 300 million of us. This would be historic (and probably unlikely for many practical reasons). Nevertheless, the U.S. Supreme Court has required suits like these to be filed as class actions. The remedy the plaintiffs are seeking is to restore the databases to what they were before DOGE merged them.

President's Message
Are You Ready to Vote? Do You Have a Voting Plan?
The month of October is a good time to prepare to vote prior to the Municipal Election on Tuesday, Nov. 4. In Pennsylvania, municipal elections are important because they directly affect daily life, deciding issues such as local taxes, schools, judicial system, and public services.
Empowering Your Vote and Your Voice
Since voter turnout is often lower than in federal or state elections, each vote carries more weight. Individual participation in municipal elections is particularly significant for several reasons:
-
Accountability: Voting allows citizens to hold leaders who are "closer to home" accountable for their decisions.
-
Voice: A vote in a municipal election is an opportunity to voice opinions on matters that affect you most directly.
-
Building Leadership: Local offices often serve as a stepping stone for future leaders. Voters can help shape the future leadership of the state and country by participating in these races.
Voter Action Steps: Visit these websites for voter information:Polls are open on election day from 7 A.M. - 8 P.M.
Your Vote is Your Voice so use it to help shape our democracy!
Thank you!
