From the Pastor

The Eyes of Jesus

John O’Donohue, To Bless the Space Between Us

I imagine the eyes of Jesus

Were harvest brown,

The light of their gazing

Suffused with the seasons:

The shadow of winter,

The mind of spring,

The blues of summer,

And amber of harvest.

A gaze that is perfect sister

To the kindness that dwells

In his beautiful hands.

The eyes of Jesus gaze on us,

Stirring in the heart’s clay

The confidence of seasons

That never lose their way to harvest.

This gaze knows the signature

Of our heartbeat, the first glimmer

From the dawn that dreamed our minds,

The crevices where thoughts grow

Long before the longing in the bone

Sends them toward the mind’s eye,

The artistry of the emptiness

That knows to slow the hunger

Of outside things until they weave

Into the twilight side of the heart,

A gaze full of all that is still future

Looking out for us to glimpse

The jeweled light in winter stone,

Quickening the eyes that look at us

To see through to where words

Are blind to say what we would love

Forever falling softly on our faces,

His gaze plies the soul with light,

Laying down a luminous layer

Beneath our brief and brittle days

Until the appointed dawn comes

Assured and harvest deft

To unravel the last black knot

And we are back home in the house

That we have never left.

Peace be with you,

Pastor Connie

3rd Annual RIC Forum Sunday, October 12

Your congregational Reconciling in Christ (RIC) Team presents the 3rd annual RIC forum on Sunday, October 12, during worship at Bethesda and Immanuel. Our speaker is Renaldo Hudson, who spent 37 years on Death Row in the Illinois prison system, and now directs the Illinois Prison Project, which believes that no one is their worst act, and no one is beyond mercy or redemption. Renaldo is a dynamic and inspiring speaker, with an amazing story to tell. We hope you’ll join us.

Dear Bethesda members and friends (and Immanuel too, if you’re interested),

We may have been just a bit premature in announcing a Wednesday night service in Advent. We would like to know from you if you would be interested in

a) a special Advent devotional, with meditations and artwork from A Sanctified Art

b) Wednesday evening contemplative services at Bethesda

c) not at this time, thanks

If you’re interested in option b, are there gifts you might be willing to share? (musical talents, reading, writing and giving a five-minute reflection on the night’s text and theme, soup, or other)

Please return your answers to Diane Fizell, dianefizell@gmail.com, by Oct. 10.

Gratefully,

Your Bethesda council

3RD ANNUAL BETHESDA WEENIE ROAST IS TONIGHT, OCT. 1

Darin Anderson is hosting a weenie roast at his house, 84515 Hatchery Road at 5 pm. All you need to bring is a lawn chair.

Many thanks from Kristen DeCamp and Kevin Colette for the donations to help them since their fire.

And now, a letter of thanks from Chuy and his family who are occupying our downstairs apartment . . .

I would like to start by saying thank you for so many reasons. Thank you for allowing me and my kids a safe and cozy home.

Thank you for helping us and blessing us with such an amazing place. My life wouldn't have been the same without this opportunity. It has changed me to be a better Dad and to be able to provide for my beautiful children. My kids have had so many happy memories here this summer and I love seeing their smiles the moment they walk inside this home.

I thank God for all of your lives and I really appreciate everything you all have done for us. Words can't describe how privileged we are to be here. Through hard times that I've had I can always remember God is good and you have helped me see that. Thank you.

Love,

The Avila Family

The BRICK’s Food Shelf Program focuses on providing a wide variety of food options in a range of forms (canned, frozen, fresh) to program participants. At times, some of the items we offer are not available through our usual donations network. This means we either need to purchase those products or go without. YOU can help out to ensure that the Food Shelf Program has a wide variety of nutritious foods to offer pantry shoppers. Throughout October The BRICK is asking for donations of breakfast cereal and pancake mix. At the end of the month, please connect with our Food Shelf Manager Amaris Shrider to drop off your donation. Reach her by phone at 715-682-7425 ext. 3 or email at foodshelfmanager@thebrickministries.org. Thank you for your support!
