Homecoming and Family Weekend

Get ready to welcome Rutgers alumni, family members, and guests back to the banks for Homecoming and Family Weekend, October 15-19. Members of the Rutgers community from around the world will come together at events featuring entertaining programs, charity bed races, sporting events, the football game against the Oregon Ducks on Saturday, October 18, and more. And for the first time, The Rutgers Boardwalk will open at 6 p.m.-9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, to start off the weekend. Don’t miss this great opportunity to experience the thrill of being a Scarlet Knight!

EVENTS, PERFORMANCES, AND FILMS

The 21st Hub City Jazz Festival takes place October 5 at the New Brunswick Hyatt Regency with performances by Maysa Leak, Damien Escobar, and many more. Choose from a variety of venues and artists.


Raise your voice at the Rutgers Choral Community Sing on October 7, an informal gathering where music brings everyone together. The renowned Rutgers Kirkpatrick Choir will perform beloved choral-orchestral works, and the audience will be invited to sing along and share the experience. Free.


The 44th Bi-Annual New Jersey Film Festival takes place through October 10. The festival is presented online and at select in-person screenings at Rutgers University. The filmmaking workshops are free, but seating is limited and advance registration is required.


Experience the magic of film and music as the Rutgers Wind Ensemble performs scores set to original works by cinematographer Dyan Machen and animation director Marc Russo, alongside iconic scenes from classic film noir, October 10 at Nicholas Music Center. Free.


American Repertory Ballet’s 2025/26 season opens with the highly anticipated return of Ethan Stiefel and Johan Kobborg’s acclaimed adaptation of Giselle, October 10-12. A haunting tale of love, betrayal, and the supernatural, Giselle tells the story of a young woman who dies of a broken heart, only to forgive her beloved from beyond the grave.


Join the Rutgers Glee Club on October 11 for a special joint concert with Stockholm's Studentsångare, the Stockholm Academic Male Choir, marking the final performance of their U.S. tour. Enjoy a dynamic evening of tenor-bass choir repertoire, including a Finnish hymn, a Swedish folk song, and a combined finale featuring both choirs.


Dust off your dirndl and lederhosen! New Brunswick's Annual Oktoberfest returns to City Center on October 12, a must-attend festival for locals and visitors. Enjoy food and drink specials, a variety of activities, and live entertainment, including traditional German music. Festive German attire is welcome. Free admission.


Join the Zimmerli Art Museum this month for engaging programs celebrating art, culture, and community, including Tekcno Powwow Jr. 2: To the Second Power on October 12; Último Domingo: Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) on October 26; SparkNight, and more. Free.


Ticket sales for the Rutgers Jewish Film Festival will begin October 16. The festival, which takes place from November 6-16, features discussions with filmmakers, scholars, and other special guests.


Mason Gross School of the Arts presents Hurricane Diane, Madeleine George's Obie-winning comedy, reimagining the Greek god Dionysus through the lens of four Jersey housewives, blending satire with pointed commentary on environmental destruction, October 31-November 8.


This month, State Theatre New Jersey brings a dynamic lineup of entertainment featuring Mrs. Doubtfire - A New Musical Comedy; The Rocky Horror Picture Show - 50th Anniversary; Ivy Queen; and The Moth Mainstage in New Brunswick.

LECTURES, PRESENTATIONS, AND WEBINARS

New Brunswick Historical Society presents Warmaiden, Molly Pitcher's Legend and Historiography on October 2 at the Henry Guest House. Researcher Sarah Walus will explore the collective memory of the Molly Pitcher legend. Free.


Rutgers experts share ideas and best practices for teaching critical AI literacies and preserving learning in the context of widespread generative AI applications on October 3 via Zoom. Registration required. Free.


On October 4, join Zimmerli Art Museum curator Julia Tulovsky as she moderates a panel discussion, "Topographies of Dissent," with guest curators Lilit Sargsyan and Armen Yesayants. And on November 3, hear dynamic conversations with Indigenous artists as they explore identity, heritage, and contemporary expression at the Zimmerli Art Museum's exhibition, "Indigenous Identities: Here, Now & Always." Free.


Join Writers at Rutgers on October 15 for an evening with Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, best-selling author of the short story collection Friday Blackwinner of the 2019 PEN/Jean Stein Book Awardand the acclaimed novel Chain-Gang All-Stars, a 2023 National Book Award finalist and one of The New York Times Top Ten Books of the Year, at the College Avenue Student Center. Free.


On October 13, join The People's Project, an anthology co-edited by Saeed Jones and Maggie Smith, featuring 26 writers. Dr. Roxane Gay, Saeed Jones, and contributors Aubrey Hirsch and Jason Silverstein will participate in a conversation about how individuals can contribute to the project in their own lives. Free.


Learn the basics or advance your Excel skills with half-day, instructor-led online classes. Options include Excel Level 1, Excel Level 2, Excel Level 3, and Pivot Tables, throughout October. Presented by Rutgers Continuing Professional Education.


Join coLAB Arts and artist Chat Travieso for a community Monument Workshop series that will culminate with participants creating their own unique monument. Participants must be able to attend both scheduled workshops on October 18 and 25. Free.


The Allen and Joan Bildner Center for the Study of Jewish Life presents "Refuseniks and Rights Defenders: Jews and the Soviet Dissident Movement" on October 20. Professor Benjamin Nathans (UPenn) will discuss his Pulitzer Prize-winning new book, To the Success of Our Hopeless Cause: The Many Lives of the Soviet Dissident Movement. Free.


View Liz Collins: Shapeshifter, the 2025–2026 Lebowitz Artist-in-Residence exhibition at the Mary H. Dana Women Artists Series Galleries at the Douglass Library, through March 13, 2026. Free.


Join the Eagleton Institute of Politics on October 16 for "The Forward Party-A Case Professorship Conversation," featuring the founders of the Forward Party, whose motto is “Not Left. Not Right. FORWARD.” This year’s conversation will highlight their careers in public service, dedication to defending democratic values, and efforts to reshape political discourse. Free.


On October 28, the Honors College presents a lecture by Dr. David Greenberg, titled “The Life and Legacy of Congressman John Lewis.” Dr. Greenberg, a Rutgers History Department faculty member and Pulitzer Prize finalist for his book John Lewis: A Life, will explore the enduring impact of Congressman Lewis. The lecture will be held at the Rutgers Academic Building on the College Avenue Campus. Free.

FOR KIDS

The Zimmerli Art Museum presents "Art Together: Indigenous Identities - Here, Now & Always," a drop-in art class for the whole family on October 12. Free.


Rutgers Athletics' Sir Henry's Kids Club is back with the Knights in Training Program for youth 12 and younger. Each membership comes with an exclusive pack filled with goodies and free tickets. 



Middlesex County has launched a Junior Rangers program for children 4-10. The program provides a series of outdoor activities that you can do with children on your own at county parks. Request your Junior Ranger activity book today. Free.

SPORTS AND RECREATION

On October 10 and 18, enjoy Rutgers football game watch parties on the giant screen in New Brunswick City Center, featuring food and drink specials and fun activities. Free admission.


Start your Sunday mornings with Yoga at The Yard by Garden of Healing Yoga & Wellness. And on October 15, join Yoga in the Galleries at the Zimmerli Art Museum. Free.


Registration for the 23rd annual Big Chill 5K, sponsored by Rutgers Recreation, is now open. Join the tradition of giving back by donating toys to support the local community and the No Hungry Knights Scholarship Fund. Register by November 7 to receive 2 free tickets to the Rutgers vs. Maryland football game on November 8.

SCIENCE AND NATURE

The Rutgers Community Farmers Markets, including the New Brunswick Community Farmers Market and Cook’s Market at Rutgers Gardens, bring fresh, healthy food from local farms. The market offers multiple locations and days for convenient access:

  • Jones Avenue – Tuesdays and Saturdays
  • Kilmer Square Park – Thursdays
  • Rutgers Gardens – Fridays
  • College Avenue Student Center – Thursdays (Closed October 16)


Observe the night sky through a 20-inch optical telescope at the Robert A. Schommer Astronomical Observatory on Rutgers' Busch Campus. Public open viewing nights are scheduled for October 9, 16, and 23, weather permitting. Free.


Immerse yourself in nature at the Rutgers Ecological Preserve and Natural Teaching Area, a 360-acre wooded preserve between the Busch and Livingston campuses in Piscataway. Free.

AROUND TOWN

Visit the new Liberty Square Park in New Brunswick City Center, featuring a dog park, natural amphitheater, and play area.


Rutgers Athletics is hosting a Big 10 Blood Drive on October 7 at the Rodkin Academic Success Center on the Busch Campus in Piscataway. Pre-register for a time slot.


View lifelike statues by artist Seward Johnson, a New Brunswick native, that will be on display along George Street through November 1. Take a self-guided walking tour of the sculpture pieces and share photos on social media for a chance to win a gift card to New Brunswick's favorite shops and restaurants. Free.
